The SUNY Brockport men’s baseball team split a doubleheader with the #20 Oswego State Lakers in a doubleheader on Sunday. The Golden Eagles dropped the first game of Sunday’s doubleheader by a tight score of 2-0. Before winning the final game of the series by a score of 13-11 to hand the Lakers their first conference loss of the season.
Brockport now advances to 24-6 overall and 8-4 in the SUNYAC with Oswego State dropping to 21-6 overall and 11-1 in the SUNYAC
Game 1:
Tom Kretzler got the start in Game 2 of the three-game SUNYAC Series and pitched six complete innings allowing two runs in the bottom of the first while striking out five batters and allowing only four hits. He also went 1-3 at the plate in the same game in which he pitched.
Along with Kretzler, James Houlahan and Nicholas Pastore were the only other two Golden Eagles to record hits in the game. Ryan Mansell drew the teams only walk while over the course of seven innings Brockport put the ball in play only striking out five times.
Game 2:
Big Bats: Brockport’s bat came alive in the final game of the series combining for 18 total hits including three doubles and two home runs as a five-run sixth inning and four-run eighth inning propelled the Golden Eagles past the Lakers.
Brian Tietjen and Nicholas Pastore both managed to record solo home runs in the same as Tietjen also managed to get a double in the game going 3-3 at the plate. Ryan Mansell went 3-4 in the second game of the day as he hit two doubles while driving in three RBIs. joining Tietjen and R. Mansell in the three-hit club was James Houlahan who went 3-6 at the plate. Pastore, Zach Eldred, and David Belsito all recorded two hits with Kretzler, Matt O’Dair and Justin Pangburn each getting one hit against the Lakers.
A total of six different Brockport Batters were walked for a combined 10 times in the game while the team only struck out four times all game. Kretzler led the team in stolen bases going 3-3 on steal attempts with Belsito swiping a bag himself.
Pitching Recap: Matt McGowan got the start in the final game going four total innings in the game before Matthew Colucci took over on the bump to start the fifth inning with Brockport trailing 5-2.
Down by three and Oswego State scoring once in the bottom of the fifth, the big sixth inning helped push Brockport ahead 7-6 to take the first lead of the game. With Colucci in place to pick up the win, he would throw 3.2 innings striking out eight batters during his time on the bump.
Ahead 13-8 with one out to go in the eighth, Adam Douglas took over for Colucci to retire the final batter of the inning. And struck out three batters in the ninth to give Brockport the win with Matthew Colucci (W 1-0, S 2-0) picking up his first win of the season.
What’s Ahead: Brockport will next travel to St. John Fisher on Tuesday, April 26th for a non-conference game against the Cardinals at 4:00 p.m. the next day, Wednesday, April 27th, Brockport will host #22 University of Rochester whom the team previously defeated back on March 22nd by a score of 12-8.
Senior Day & Senior Student-Athlete BBQ
The upcoming weekend Brockport will host their final regular-season home game of the season against the New Paltz Hawks with a game 1 taking place on Friday, April 29th at 3:00 p.m. the following day in a doubleheader against New Paltz, SUNY Brockport Athletics with host Senior Day along with a Senior Student-Athlete BBQ on April 30th with all Senior Student-Athletes being honored in between games.
