The Rochester Red Wings began the 2022 season much like the 2021 season ended- with a shutout defeat.
Rochester lost its season opener 5-0 to Toledo in front of 10,522 fans at Fifth Third Field on Tuesday, striking out 16 times and tallying just one extra-base hit. The Mud Hens’ bullpen threw 4.2 hitless innings in relief of starter Nivaldo Rodriguez.
Jacob Robson led off the bottom of the second by homering off Jackson Tetreault, who surrendered five hits and three earned runs in his four innings and took the loss. Erasmo Ramírez, Tyler Clippard and Reed Garrett each tossed a scoreless inning at the bullpen’s back end, but five of the nine Red Wing batters struck out at least twice and six left at least a pair of runners on base. The Red Wings did not record a hit in eight at bats with runners in scoring position, leaving nine on base.
Mud Hens outfielder Kody Clemens, son of pitching legend Roger, starred at bat with three hits in four chances and two runs scored. Daz Cameron drove in two runs with a line-drive double in the third.
The Red Wings and Mud Hens play again on Wednesday night, with first pitch scheduled for 6:35.
