Luxury Vacation Rentals Postseason Preview: Four Section V Girls’ teams set to compete in state semifinals this weekend

Bishop Kearney, East Rochester, Pittsford Mendon and Waterloo were four of five Section V champions who qualified for the state tournament this upcoming weekend in Troy. Here’s how the Bombers, Indians, Kings and Vikings match up with their respective opponents:

CLASS A
PITTSFORD MENDON VIKINGS (24-1/Monroe County Division II)
vs.
TAPPAN ZEE DUTCHMEN (24-1/Conference II League E)

How they got here: Pittsford Mendon (No. 1 NYSSWA), the top seed in the Section V Class A playoffs, defeated Gates-Chili, 71-37, in its first sectional game. The Vikings followed up with a 68-48 win over Brighton in the quarterfinals, a 57-30 win over Pittsford Sutherland in the semifinals and a 58-39 win over Webster Schroeder to claim the sectional title. Pittsford Mendon advanced to the state semifinals with a 77-35 win over Section VI champion Williamsville South.

Tappan Zee (No. 2 NYSSWA) took down Pelham, 74-46, to open postseason play. The Dutchmen breezed by Nanuet, 71-32, in the quarterfinals, defeated Mahopac, 77-39, in the semifinals and came out on top over Walter Panas, 59-40, to claim the Section I Class A title. Tappan Zee made the state semifinals after beating Wallkill (IX), 71-46, in regionals.

A 10 a.m. tipoff is scheduled Friday morning at Hudson Valley Community College.

CLASS AA
BISHOP KEARNEY KINGS (20-3/Private-Parochial Division I)
vs.
CORNING-PAINTED POST HAWKS (15-4/Southern Tier West Division)

How they got here: Bishop Kearney (No. 3 NYSSWA), the top seed in the Section V Class AA playoffs, defeated Rush-Henrietta, 91-29, in its first sectional game. The Kings followed up with a 65-44 win over Victor in the semifinals and a 58-52 win over Fairport to claim the sectional title. Bishop Kearney advanced to the state semifinals with a 64-55 win over Section VI champion Lancaster.

Corning-Painted Post (No. 13 NYSSWA) took down Horseheads, 54-52, to open postseason play. The Hawks snuck by Elmira, 46-44, to claim the Section IV Class AA title. Corning-Painted Post made the state semifinals for the first time in program history after beating Warwick, 54-52, in regionals.

CLASS C
EAST ROCHESTER BOMBERS (24-1/Wayne County)
vs.
MILLBROOK BLAZERS (22-1/Section IX Division IV)

How they got here: East Rochester (No. 4 NYSSWA), the top seed in the Section V Class C1 playoffs, defeated Rochester Academy, 81-19, in its first sectional game. The Bombers followed up with a 53-35 win over Geneseo in the semifinals and a 61-37 win over Alexander to claim the sectional title. East Rochester advanced to regionals with a 56-42 win over Class C2 champion Pavilion and into the state semifinals with a 60-57 win over Section VI champion Frewsburg.

Millbrook (No. 5 NYSSWA) took down Pine Plains, 69-23, to open postseason play. The Blazers breezed by Chester Academy, 57-28, to claim the Section IX Class C title. Millbrook made regionals after a 65-28 win over Tuckahoe (I) and the state semifinals after a 51-43 win over Carle Place (VIII).

WATERLOO INDIANS (25-0/Finger Lakes East Division)
vs.
PUTNAM VALLEY TIGERS (18-7/Conference III League D)

How they got here: Waterloo (No. 1 NYSSWA), the top seed in the Section V Class B1 playoffs, defeated North Rose-Wolcott/Sodus, 72-21, in its first sectional game. The Indians followed up with a 61-51 win over Palmyra-Macedon in the semifinals and a 59-38 win over Hornell to claim the sectional title. Waterloo advanced to regionals with a 43-30 win over Class B2 champion Midlakes and into the state semifinals for the first time in nine years with a 70-45 win over Section VI champion Lewiston-Porter.

Putnam Valley (No. 4 NYSSWA) took down Dobbs Ferry, 74-18, to open postseason play. The Tigers breezed by Bronxville, 45-39, in the quarterfinals, defeated Hastings, 51-45, in the semifinals and beat Irvington, 52-46, to claim the Section I Class B title. Putnam Valley made regionals for the first time in program history after beating Red Hook (IX), 54-49 and the state semifinals after a 49-38 win over Locust Valley (VIII) to snap the longest winning streak in Long Island history (54 games).
