ROCHESTER, N.Y. — A defensive struggle appropriately ended on three defensive stops, and the Newark Reds claimed the 2022 SectionV Class B1 championship with a 40-37 victory over Finger Lakes East rival, Palmyra-Macedon.
The title was the 13th in program history tying Newark with Bishop Kearney for the fourth most in Section V history.
Isaiah Camp and Gabriel Caraballo combined on an alley-oop with 1 minute and 39 seconds remaining for the go-ahead points. Caraballo fed Camp who finished the play with an and-one to give Newark a 38-37 edge. Newark denied Pal-Mac on the Red Raiders’ final three possessions of the game punctuated by Camp’s block of a game-tying 3-point attempt with 1.1 seconds remaining.
Brayden Steve finished with a game-high 15 points including both ends of one-and-one free throws with 15 seconds left in the contest.
Newark moves on to play Class B2 champion Wellsville in the New York State regional qualifier. Time and location of Wednesday’s matchup are TBA.
Down 28-22 entering the fourth, Paul Goodness highlighted a 10-4 Pal-Mac run with five points including a 3-pointer to tie the game at 32, Goodness hit a fall-away jumper with two minutes remaining for a 37-35 Pal-Mac edge.
Back-to-back three-point efforts from Ian Goodness, one from deep and the other the traditional way helped Pal-Mac to an 8-5 lead after the first quarter. Ian and Paul Goodness accounted for two points apiece as Pal-Mac scored the first four points of the second to take its largest lead of the game at seven.
Brayden Steve scored five points to fuel a 7-0 Newark run to tie the game at 12 mid-quarter. The rest of the half remained tight with the Red Raiders holding an 18-17 edge at the break.
Newark controlled the third quarter with an 11-2 run to take its biggest edge of the game at eight. Raeshawn Howard, who was saddled with foul trouble in the first half, scored four in this run and Steve hit a 3-pointer. On the defensive end, Camp was dominant in the third for Newark, altering or blocking shots in the lane and grabbing defensive rebounds to limit Pal-Mac to one shot on most possessions.
Howard and Camp finished with seven points apiece for Newark. Daveon Wright scored five. Carraballo had four points and Stevie Brown two to round out the Reds’ scoring. Paul Goodness led the Pal-Mac attack with 14 points. Ian Goodness had 13. Noah Brooks (5), Alex Wootton (3) and Robert Kinslow (2) also scored for Pal-Mac.
