Waterloo improves to 23-0 by winning the Section V Class B1 block

In the Class B1 girls’ basketball final, top seed Waterloo found themselves giving up a 9-0 run to second seeded Hornell and trailed 13-12.

Indians senior Giavanna White-Principio, and her teammates heard something that spurred a 29-0 run and Waterloo cruised to their second straight Section V title, 59-38 over the Red Raiders.

“Coach always gives that speech. He says something and it gets in our head and we just push through.”

White-Principio earned MVP honors with teammates Jazzmyn Lewis and Morgan Caraballo earning All-Tournament. The combination of the two junior guards on defense and the 6-foot-1 White-Principio in the middle makes for a daunting task for any team.

“That’s our game. We wanna turn you over, we wanna pressure you. We realize, if you break our press, Gia’s still waiting for you,” said Waterloo coach Mike Bree.

The second quarter 23-0 run spurred by 15 points scored between Caraballo (6), Lewis (4) and White-Principio (5) pushed the lead to 37-13 at the half.

The run continued into the third quarter until freshman Lillian Hoyt hit a three-pointer, one of two she made in that eight minutes but the lead quickly ballooned to 30.

Getting those shots was difficult with Lewis flying to the ball and all five Indians running the floor in transition.

And like most teams, Hornell didn’t have an answer for the 6’1” White-Principio inside.

She and the only other senior on the team, Macy Carr, scored 12 points each to lead the Indians to a third match-up of the season against Finger Lakes East rival Midlakes. The Class B2 champions losing the other two games by 13 and 11 points, two of the tightest games Waterloo (23-0) have played all season, which includes wins over Mercy and Canandaigua.

“They’ll throw some wrinkles at us, we’ll throw some wrinkles at them, it’s gonna be a war Tuesday night,” Bree said.
