The Men’s Room Championship Preview: Lyons and Oakfield-Alabama set to battle in C2 Boys’ title bout

The Lyons Lions have won 20 sectional titles including three in the past four years. The Oakfield-Alabama Hornets are the reigning Class C2 champions. Both teams have only suffered one defeat, and with these two teams about to play in the C2 championship, it’s time to break it down.

No. 1 seed LYONS LIONS (21-1/Wayne County) vs. No. 2 seed OAKFIELD-ALABAMA HORNETS (21-1/Genesee County I)

Scoring offense: Lyons (79.8 PPG), Oakfield-Alabama (69.4 PPG)

Scoring defense: Lyons (45.3 PAPG), Oakfield-Alabama (43.4 PAPG)

Current streak: Lyons has won five straight; Oakfield-Alabama has won four in a row.

How they arrived here: Lyons defeated No. 8 seed Warsaw in the quarterfinals by a score of 64-36. In the semifinals, Lyons took down No. 5 seed Campbell-Savona by a score of 77-46. For Oakfield-Alabama, the Hornets won a first-round game against No. 10 seed Kendall, 82-40 and were able to defeat No. 3 seed Pembroke in the semifinals 61-31.

Players to Watch for Lyons: JC Walker– Jr., 22 PPG, 14.4 RPG, 6 SPG; Jaylen Battle– Sr., 18 PPG, 8 APG, 4 SPG; Jacob Sides– Jr., 14 PPG, 6 RPG and Jaiden Lopez– Jr., 10 PPG.

Players to Watch for Oakfield-Alabama: Gaige Armbrewster 6-foot-1 Sr. F/G; Kaden Cusmano 6-foot-2 Sr. F/G; Kameron Cusmano 6-foot-2 Sr. F and Jordan Schlagenhauf 6-foot-1 Sr. F.

Coaches: Dean Schott II (Lyons), Ryan Stehlar (Oakfield-Alabama)

History 101: As said earlier, Lyons has won 20 Section V basketball championships, which is second in all of Section V to only East (26). They have won five championships in the last 10 years. Oakfield-Alabama has won four Section V basketball championships, but only one of them has come in the past 47 years. They’ve won in 2021, 1975, 1963, and 1959.

What’s at stake: A spot in the NYS Far West Regional Qualifier against the winner of the C3 championship (Caledonia-Mumford vs. York)

A 7 p.m. tip off is scheduled Friday at Victor High School.
