WEBSTER , N.Y. — Alex DeRosa’s putback at the buzzer lifted Webster Schroeder over Greece Athena, 49-48 in Section V Class A1 action Saturday night. DeRosa grabbed a rebound and finished in the lane as the Warriors held off a late Athena rally and advanced to the semi-finals.
Schroeder will play cross-town rival Webster Thomas on Tuesday with a spot in the finals at stake.
The game-winning play started with Ben Carey driving from the left and finding Gio Schillaci on the opposite side of the floor for a shot attempt. The ball bounced off the rim to DeRosa who was standing underneath the basket and banked the ball in for the winner.

Trailing 46-40, James Reaves, Jr. capped an 8-1 Athena run to give the Trojans a 48-47 lead with 23 seconds remaining in the contest. Izaiah Stewart sparked the Athena rally with a pair of defensive plays – a steal and a block – to set up Jahon Jones and James Reaves for baskets. Khorie Reaves and Jones both hit one of two free throws to tie the game.
Schroeder regained the advantage when Nick Hauman converted a charity toss.
Reaves scored in transition to give Athena its first lead since a 6-5 edge in the first quarter.
Carey and Schillaci combined for 21 first-half points as the Warriors took a 27-23 lead into the break. Carey connected twice from behind the 3-point arc in the first 16 minutes of play while Schillaci hit three from distance over the same time.
Athena twice fell behind by seven in the second quarter but was able to cut the lead to four each time led by Khorie Reaves who had eight first-half points and James Reaves who added seven in the opening half.
The third quarter saw the Trojans cut the lead to one possession on a number of occasions but could not find a way to retake the lead. With the score at 32-31 midway through the third, the Warriors went on an 8-0 run to take their biggest lead of the night punctuated by a three from Schillaci.
Athena closed the third with an Izaiah Stewart three to trim the Warrior lead to 40-34.
The Trojans fought their way back to within three twice early in the fourth only to be answered by a triple from Carey and an and-one by Nicholas Hauman.

The game pitted two teams that have had success with baskets at the end of regulation this season. Carey capped a 16-point second-half rally with a triple at the buzzer to tie game, and the Warriors went on to beat Rush-Henrietta earlier in the month. Carey also hit a game-winning 3 in a victory over Pittsford Sutherland.
James Reaves hit a 40-foot shot at the buzzer to beat Sutherland on February sixth. Five days later, Khorie Reaves scored at the horn to beat Canandaigua.
