ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Phil Nwugwo sparked a decisive run to close the game as the Victor Blue Devils defeated host Irondequoit 49-45, Wednesday night.
Nwugwo’s dunk in transition snapped a 44-all tie, and the Blue Devils finished the game with a 5-1 spurt to win their fifth straight game.
Victor struggled at the free throw line (7-of-21) for much of the contest but hit 3-of-4 down the stretch, including two by Cam Ryan with 3.8 seconds left for the final margin.
Victor jumped to a quick 8-0 lead to open the game and finished the first quarter up 16-7. Ryan Dodge hit two 3-pointers, and Nwugwo accounted 6 of his 14 in the first stanza.
Victor’s game-opening run was the first of a back-and forth affair.

The Blue Devils extended their lead to 13 in the second quarter before Irondequoit tightened the defensive pressure to score the last 10 points of the half and pull within three at 22-19 heading into the break. Evan Leonardo hit three 3-pointers and scored 10 of his game-high 16 points in the first half.
Leonardo hit another triple and converted an old-fashioned three-point play as Irondequoit took a seven-point lead early in the third.
Ryan scored back-to-back baskets and punctuated a 10-0 Victor to close the third quarter with a three-point edge at 36-33.
Victor extended its lead to eight before Xavier Gissendanner had four of his 14 points during a 9-0 stretch when Irondequoit grabbed a 44-43 edge.
AJ Queri hit three 3-pointers and added nine points for Victor (17-1). Bobby Dodge had six points while Garrett Clar (5) and Nick Leonard (3) also scored for the Blue Devils.
Damon Brumfield scored nine for Irondequoit (11-5). Ryan Heath had six points.
