The Canandaigua girls’ basketball team improved to 14-1 on the season with a 48-22 victory over Spencerport on Friday night.

The Braves’ defense came out strong but both teams struggled to score early. Sophomore Macy Bacon scored twice going to the basket for Canandaigua.

Eighth-grader Georgia Gray stuck her first varsity three-pointer for Spencerport’s only points of the first eight minutes.

“They always play us tough here, usually to single-digits, “ Canandaigua coach Mike Brennan said.

The Braves out-scored Spencerport 9-5 in the third quarter with seven of those points coming from Bacon, including a three-point play with half a second left on the clock.

The defense continued to dominate as eight of Spencerport’s ten second half points came from the free throw line, Canandaigua is allowing just over 30 points per game defensively.

Brennan said, “Early on, the defense was all effort but now, it’s effort and they know where to be but it’s been there all season.”

Bacon finished with 16 points, largely cleaning up on the boards while Herman and Abbey Herod had 10 points each.

“The only nice thing about not shooting well is you get a lot of offensive rebounds and I think we took advantage of that a little bit, “ Brennan said.

The Braves keep pace with Pittsford Mendon atop 17-team Class A, each with one loss, meaning these teams could meet again in Sectionals.

“We’re looking at playing a 6-7-8 seed and they’re good, Spencerport could be one of them and they’re a good, well-coached team and they play hard and there are a couple of other good ones,” Brennan said.
