ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Four different players found the bottom of the net during the fourth quarter as the Pittsford Sutherland boys’ basketball team erased a deficit and beat host Churchville-Chili 65-59, Monday night.

Tyler Mullin connected on back-to-back 3-pointers before Sam Pisanelli hit from long range coming out of a timeout to secure Sutherland’s third win in the past four games.

“We were in timeouts just talking about trying to stay loose,” Sutherland head coach John Nally said. “We wanted to stay shot ready. As long as we were ready to shoot, I thought they were going to go down eventually. It was just a matter of time.”

Trailing 47-43 after three quarters of play, Bobby Dodge started the Knights’ scoring in the fourth. Max Michalski followed with one-of-two free throws before the Mullin baskets. Michalski and Pisanelli delivered a basket apiece to give Sutherland a lead it did not surrender.

“I thought we had some good looks in the third quarter,” Nally reinforced. “It just didn’t go down especially early. Maybe we tightened up a little bit but we stayed with it.”

Churchville used a 9-1 run midway through the third to take its largest lead of the game.

Jason Gibbs and Robert Munding combined to hit 3-pointers on three consecutive possessions. Gibbs converted 1-of-2 free throws for a 40-33 C-C lead with 2:59 remaining in the quarter.

Dodge responded with one of his of three triples on the night to keep Sutherland within striking distance.

Dodge and Mullin hit three 3-pointers apiece and accounted for 11 and nine points respectively.

“Those two seniors are a big part of the story to get us back,” Nally stated. “It’s good leadership by those guys on the road tonight.”

Gibbs led all scorers with 29 points. The junior guard connected eight times from the floor including three from long range. Gibbs also converted 10-of-11 free throws. His three tosses from the charity stripe at the end of the third gave the Saints their four-point advantage.

“He’s a good player,” Nally said of Gibbs who is averaging nearly 22 points per game. “We had to go box-and-one on him in the first quarter, and that made a huge difference. I hated to have to do that especially so early in the game, but he came out and hit his first two threes. These guys know him, and they know that he can get hot. The whole scouting report was about not letting him get hot early…You got to do what you got to do.”
