Gissendanner, Heath, Mahoney, Smith and Wright earn weekly county honors

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Xavier Gissendanner and Ryan Heath led Irondequoit to the Hilton Holiday Hall-of-Fame Tournament title. Kenyon Mahoney paced Canandaigua to the Penfield Tournament championship. Nolan Smith helped host Honeoye Falls-Lima (HF-L) claim the hardware in the Cougar Classic, and Tobey Wright guided Rush-Henrietta as the Royal Comets won a battle of Class AA contenders. The quintet earned player-of-the-week honors for December 26th-January 1st as announced by Monroe County coaches.

Wright finished with a team-high 17 points in R-H’s 62-59 win over Edison Tech to earn Monroe County Division I Player of the Week . With the game on the line, the senior guard had a steal and converted the go-ahead free throws at the other end of floor as R-H pulled out the win in the closing seconds. The Royal Comets jumped to third with the win over Edison which currently holds the second spot in the Class AA standings. Wright is averaging 19 points per game on the season.

Gissendanner and Heath combined to score 84 points in a pair of wins to grab Division II Co-Player of the Week honors. Heath scored 16 in Irondequoit’s 76-41 win over Franklin in the tournament opener and followed with a game-high 26 in the 81-57 win over Greece Athena in the Hilton tournament championship. Gissendanner had 17 and 25 points respectively in the victories. Heath scored 10 and Gissendanner four when the Eagles pulled away from Athena with a 26-9 advantage in the fourth quarter of the championship game. Heath averages 19.4 points per game on the season. Gissendanner score 17 per contest.

Mahoney grabbed Division II weekly honors with a 21-point performance in Canandaigua’s come-from-behind victory over host Penfield. The senior guard connected on 7-of-9 attempts from behind the 3-point arc in the contest including two in the fourth and another triple in overtime as the Braves rallied from an 11-point deficit to take the tournament title. Mahoney opened the tournament with 12 points in Canandaigua’s 83-46 triumph over C.G. Finney.

Smith registered a pair of double-doubles to lead HF-L. Smith scored 22 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in a victory over Greece Odyssey in the tournament opener of the Cougar Classic. The 6-foot-6 junior forward followed that with 21 points, 11 rebounds and five blocks in a 72-62 overtime win against NE Douglass in the tournament championship.
