Bishop Kearney graduated six players from the girls basketball team, including four starters, all of whom had been with the program for several years.
That left senior Kaia Goode to lead the way for the rebuilding of the Kings’ program.
“She’s been the engine for the team for a couple of years, a lot of people didn’t know it because there were so many big names around her,” coach Kevan Sheppard said.
Goode scored 26 points and had 13 steals in a 68-45 victory over Bishop Ludden on Ed Nietopski Court.
The game started slowly but Goode hit her first three-pointer and stole the in-bounds pass and scored again. Caydence Hadley scored on the next trip and it was 18-9 after one quarter.
“Because most of us are small, we’re trying to pick up on defense and move the ball quick and most of the time we’re faster than our opponent and we have to capitalize on that each game,” Goode said.
Goode’s AAU teammate Amarah Streiff got hot in the second quarter for the Gaelic Knights, scoring nine of her team-high 25 points to put Ludden ahead.
Klarissa Goode knocked down a three-pointer and that put Kearney up 26-25 at the half.
In the third quarter, the Kings came out of the locker room on a 10-0 run, sparked by Goode and Aniya Rowe leading a full court press that yielded 37 takeaways.
Add the interior defense of Hadley and Allie Hall, and the Kings pulled away.
Goode, who led the Kings’ soccer team to the Sectional semifinals, wants to keep the roll going on the court.
“We’re low on numbers so we just come into practice and we work, keep improving and do what we can,” said Goode.
Klarissa Goode added 15 points on three three-pointers and Rowe scored 13.
Kearney hosts Elmira Public on Saturday.
