Freshman goalie Aden Brown stopped all 30 shots he faced and Pittsford beat Hilton at the Bill Gray’s Ice Plex, 2-0, earning Brown his first varsity shutout.
“Played extremely well, controlled rebounds and made a couple of key saves for us,” Pittsford hockey coach Steve Thering said about Brown’s effort.
The Panthers (2-1-1) scored just over six minutes into the game. After killing one of three penalties in the first period, Tyler VanPutte dove to clear the puck out of his own zone and Colin Norton skated up the right side, scoring inside the left post for a 1-0 Pittsford lead.
The second period saw the Panthers drawing penalties instead of taking them and Brown coming up big in net.
With under four minutes to play in the period, Ben Norten sent the puck across to Aidan McGrain for a 2-0 lead heading to the third.
Hilton spent much of the period on the penalty kill and Cadets goalie Aiden Hill came up big to keep them in it.
“A very physical game and it came down to moving the puck and giving ourselves a couple of chances,” Thering said.
Hill stopped 17 shots in his second start for the Cadets.
The Panthers are starting to get back to playing in front of fans and back to Pittsford hockey.
“I think there’s a big social, emotional thing for these kids and something that’s been missing and I think it’s a step towards normalcy,” said Thering.
Next up for Pittsford is a game against a strong Syracuse City team on the road.
