Between 2007-2011, Irondequoit’s powerhouse teams were led by seven-footers Jordan and Josiah Heath, in 2011, earning a Section V title.
There is a different Heath leading the Eagles this season, no relation.
“If he was, he’d be taller, then he’d be really unbelievable, “ Irondequoit coach Chris Cardon said of junior guard Ryan Heath. His 18 points led the Eagles to a 69-38 victory over Spencerport in their season opener.
Senior Damon Brumfield scored the first eight points for the Eagles and Heath scored 10 points, including a long three-pointer at the buzzer as Irondequoit built a 24-4 lead after the first quarter.
The lead was 37-10 at the half with Bishop Kearney transfer Xavier Gissendanner scored five points in the quarter. Heath had 14 points as the Rangers went on a scoring drought for the first half of the second quarter.
In the third, Irondequoit called off a full-court press and the Rangers, led by Bryon Streb and Kyle Milburn, put together a run in the third quarter.
“I give them credit. They were down a lot of points and they came out and took it to us early in that third quarter, “ said Cardon.
Heath suffered from cramps and played sparingly in the second half, finishing with a game-high 18 points and Gissendanner stepped up, finishing with 13 points.
“They’ve been a really good group in the off-season. A lot of time, a lot of energy and they came out with a lot of energy, “ Cardon said of his team, with Heath being the only returning starter.
Streb led the Rangers (1-2), scoring nine of his 11 points in the second half while Te’Jon McCadney scored five of his seven points in the first half.
The Eagles will be put to the test next week with games against Webster Schroeder and Webster Thomas.
