Tyler Eberhart’s goal with 7:48 to play broke a 2-2 tie and gave Churchville-Chili hockey a 3-2 win over Canandaigua Tuesday night.
Liam Letters made 33 saves for Saints (4-1) while Charlie Fuller stopped 28 for the Braves (2-4).
Midway through the first period, Dominick Spychalski picked up the puck behind the Saints net and fed Griffin Harvieux swept it in for the Braves.
Four minutes later, Trey Eberhart brought the puck out of Churchville’s zone and fed Shane Girolamo who rushed up the left and netted the equalizer.
In the second period, Spychalski stole the puck in the neutral zone and scored on the breakaway and Canandaigua took a 2-1 lead into the second intermission.
“The neutral zone turnovers are what can kill you, “ Saints coach Brian Young said. “As soon as we started sending the puck in deep and establish the forecheck, we were able to take over offensively.”
With 9:33 to play, Girolamo found the loose puck near the right post and pumped it in to tie the game.
1:45 later, Trey Eberhart took a shot from the point that bounced to his brother, Tyler, who scored the game-winner.
“They have that mentality right now that, it’s a long game, three 17-minute periods, we’re gonna play every one of them minute to minute,” Young said. “We’re gonna continue to play the game right up to the end.”
The Saints averaged eight goals per game in their first three wins of the season, to get three, Young says, is a credit to the Braves.
“In those previous games, we were finding those open spaces left and right, these guys shut those open spaces down well. We were still getting shots, but they weren’t as quality.”
The Saints lead their Division after five games, with seven teams in their Sectional class, the top seeded team will earn a bye.
“This team knows what’s at the end and they wanna make sure they’re working right from the beginning of the season to get in that position,” said Young.
