Brayden Steve scored 12 of his game-high 23 points in the first half when Newark grabbed a 35-21 advantage and cruised from there to an opening-night win. The 6-foot-5 junior forward/guard connected five times from the floor over the first 16 minutes and then added 11 more points in the third quarter when the Reds pulled away. Gabriel Caraballo added 10 points, seven assists and six rebounds. Raeshawn Howard had 13 points and eight rebounds. Isaiah Camp (7), Zach Herd (7), Daveon Wright (4), Addison Bump (4), Nick Hayes (3) and Michael Peters rounded out the scoring for Newark. I was happy with our guards’ defense throughout the game. Long season and we still have a lot of work ahead of us, but it’s nice getting the first win out of the way.”
