Section V Boys’ Basketball tips off the 2021-22 season on November 26th. Here are the season previews for Brighton, Churchville-Chili, Gates-Chili, Irondequoit, Spencerport and Webster Thomas:
BRIGHTON BRUINS (Class A1)
Last season record and finish: 5-7, lost in Class A1 sectional quarterfinals to Irondequoit
Coach: David Tisa (10th season overall, Fifth season at Brighton)
Top returners: Eli Desandis Sr. G; Andrew Falter Sr. G; Matt Howe Sr. G/F; Quinn O’Brien Sr. G/F; Reggie Smith Jr. So. G/F; David Tisa Jr. Sr. G
Outlook: “We will be breaking in new players at all positions as we graduated most of our scoring. We have a core group of seniors who have been playing together since grade school and are ready to take the reins. The shooting ability of this group, plus the emergence of Reggie Smith Jr., who is a threat anywhere on the court, will hopefully carry us. We are in a good spot as we prepare for this season. We had a full summer and fall together and this is a great group of kids who work hard and really play for one another. We also have juniors such as Trygve Watkins and Andrew Kotrides who were major contributors on Junior Varsity getting ready to contribute as well.”
First game: December 8th vs. Greece Odyssey at 7:15 p.m.

CHURCHVILLE-CHILI SAINTS (Class A1)
Last season record and finish: 2-9, lost in Class A1 sectional quarterfinals to Pittsford Mendon
Coach: Timothy Miller (12th season)
Top returners: Jason Gibbs Jr. PG (18.6 PPG last season); Robert Munding Sr. G (5 PPG last season); Joaquon Thomas Jr. F/C (8 PPG last season)
Top newcomers: Michael Sardou So. G
Outlook: “The Saints are optimistic with their top returner, Jason Gibbs, leading the way.”
First game: December 3rd vs. Hilton at 7:15 p.m.
GATES-CHILI SPARTANS (Class AA)
Last season record and finish: 12-2, won Class AA sectional title over Victor
Coach: Teddy Tuggles (Fifth season overall, First Varsity season)
Top returners: Cameron Brown Sr. G
Top newcomers: Kani Mitchem Jr.; Brandon Randolph Jr.; Ryan Santiago Sr.; Sammy Seymour Sr. G
Outlook: “We are young this year, having only one returning Varsity player, but we are the returning sectional champions and will be ready to compete. We have some key players coming up from Junior Varsity that can really help us win and compete this season. One positive of me being a new Varsity head coach in our division is that nobody knows my coaching style on offense and defense yet, which could work to our advantage. I’m excited and ready to compete, just as I know all coaches and players are.”
First game: December 10th at Webster Thomas at 7:15 p.m.
IRONDEQUOIT EAGLES (Class A1)
Last season record and finish: 11-3, lost in Class A1 sectional final to Pittsford Mendon
Coach: Chris Cardon (36th season, 486-288 career record)
Top returners: Charles Barnes Sr. F; Damon Brumfield Sr. G (2.4 PPG, 1.8 RPG last season); Ryan Heath Jr. PG (12.4 PPG, 5.1 APG, 5.5 RPG, All-County Second Team last season); Evan Leonardo Sr. G (3.6 PPG last season); Kenyen Lovett Jr. F (2.5 PPG last season); Owen Salerno Sr. C
Top newcomers: Javier Flowers Sr. F (Rochester Prep transfer); Xavier Gissendanner Jr. G (Bishop Kearney transfer); Aiden Greco Jr. PG; Azavier Ross Jr. F (Bishop Kearney transfer); Quinn VanKerkhove So. G (Led Junior Varsity in scoring last season)
Outlook: “Though we have only one starter back, I really like this team. Our guys put in a lot of work in the offseason. We have good depth and our chemistry is good. Ryan Heath has really improved at the point and makes everyone better. Damon Brumfield, Evan Leonardo and Kenyen Lovett got good minutes last year and are ready to take the next step. Owen Salerno and Charles Barnes give us good play inside. Xavier Gissendanner gives us a proven scorer. Quinn VanKerkhove is a solid outside threat. Javier Flowers and Azavier Ross gives us some toughness inside off the bench. This team has a lot of potential and should get better as the year goes on!”
First game: December 10th at Spencerport at 7:15 p.m.

SPENCERPORT RANGERS (Class A1)
Last season record and finish: 2-8, did not qualify for sectionals
Coach: Richard Vleck (Fourth season)
Top returners: Justin Bryant Sr. F; Connor Lissow Sr. G; Jason Marchincin Sr. F/G; Te’Jon McCadney Sr. G; Justin Schnauber Sr. G; Bryon Streb Jr. F
Top newcomers: Taron Beachum Jr. F; Antonio Diaz Jr. G; Ty Heaton Jr. G; Kyle Milburn So. G
Outlook: “We are reinventing ourselves after graduating Ronald McDonald Senior Selection Patrick Uebelacker. He led the division in rebounds, so team rebounding will be important as well as team shooting and taking care of the basketball. As always, we are in a difficult division, but this group has made a career surprising people when the ball tips through their defensive effort and I am expecting them to do it again this year.”
First game: December 3rd vs. Brockport at 7:30 p.m.
WEBSTER THOMAS TITANS (Class A1)
Last season record and finish: 10-2, lost in Class A1 sectional semifinals to Irondequoit
Coach: Griffin Coles (Ninth season, 76-78 career record)
Top returners: Eli Adams Sr. F/G (4 PPG, 4 RPG last season); Jackson Kulik Sr. F/G (23 PPG, 9.5 RPG, Monroe County Division II Player Of The Year last season); Sean Linder Jr. G; Shawn Mason Jr. G (12 PPG last season); David Petz Sr. G; Andrew Quinn Sr. F/G (9 PPG, 4 RPG last season)
Top newcomers: Cory Jarvis Jr. F; Jackson Mulcahy Jr. G/F
Outlook: “Unlike last year, this team brings back a lot of experience with 10 returners, including four returning starters. Many players improved in the offseason and will contribute at both ends of the floor. The team will need to buy in to the defensive end of the court if we want to take a step up from last season. This team is very unselfish on the offensive end, which helps with shot selection and decision-making. They have a competitive side which makes practices intense each day.”
First game: December 10th vs. Gates-Chili at 7:15 p.m.
