The 2021 Section V Football tournament is set to continue this weekend with 10 semifinal games for Class AA, B, C, D and 8-Man while Class A1 and A2 will crown champions. Here’s the breakdown:
CLASS A1 CHAMPIONSHIP
No. 1 seed BRIGHTON BRUINS (9-0, No. 10 NYSSWA Class A) vs. No. 2 seed UPREP GRIFFINS (8-1, No. 17 NYSSWA Class A)
How they got here: Brighton (No. 10 NYSSWA Class A) opened with a 42-16 win over No. 8 seed Churchville-Chili in the quarterfinals and advanced past No. 4 seed Webster Thomas, 20-8, in the semifinals. UPrep (No. 17 NYSSWA Class A) defeated No. 7 seed Penfield, 38-0, in the quarterfinals and No. 3 seed Webster Schroeder, 16-7, in the semifinals.

History 101: Brighton is making its first sectionals final appearance since 2016. As the No. 2 seed five years ago, the Bruins fell to top-seeded Greece Athena, 35-14, in the Class A title game. UPrep is making its first sectionals’ final appearance in program history.

CLASS A2 CHAMPIONSHIP
No. 1 seed CANANDAIGUA BRAVES (9-0, No. 3 NYSSWA Class A) vs. No. 2 seed SPENCERPORT RANGERS (8-1, No. 15 NYSSWA Class A)
How they got here: Canandaigua (No. 3 NYSSWA Class A) received an automatic bid to the semifinals via a forfeit and advanced past No. 4 seed Greece Arcadia, 34-6. Spencerport (No. 15 NYSSWA Class A) defeated No. 7 seed Brockport, 41-23, in the quarterfinals and No. 3 seed East/World Of Inquiry, 39-8, in the semifinals.

History 101: Canandaigua is seeking its third consecutive sectional title. The Braves won the 2019 Class A championship as the No. 5 seed and the Spring 2021 Class A championship as the No. 2 seed. This will be the second straight season these squads match up in sectionals. The Braves defeated the Rangers, 29-10, in the sectional semifinals back in the spring.
