Warsaw and Geneseo to decide Girls’ Soccer Class C1 title

Top-seeded Warsaw ranks No. 2 in New York State.

One team is making its third consecutive sectional final appearance. The other is seeking its second straight title. Warsaw and Geneseo will meet Friday to decide the 2021 Section V Class C1 Girls’ Soccer Championship. Here’s the breakdown:

No. 1 seed WARSAW TIGERS (19-0/Livingston County Division III) vs. No. 2 seed GENESEO BLUE DEVILS (15-3/Livingston County Division II)

How they got here: Warsaw (No. 2 NYSSWA Class C) opened with a 10-1 win over No. 16 seed Pembroke in the first round and No. 9 seed Avon, 4-1, in the quarterfinals before advancing past No. 4 seed Williamson, 6-0, in the semifinals. Geneseo (No. 11 NYSSWA Class C) defeated No. 15 seed Sodus, 8-0, in the first round and No. 10 seed Canisteo-Greenwood, 3-0, in the quarterfinals before advancing past No. 6 seed Addison, 1-0, in the semifinals.

Total goals scored: Warsaw (102), Geneseo (50)

Total goals allowed: Warsaw (8), Geneseo (9)

Trends: Warsaw has pitched 13 shutouts this season. Geneseo has won eight of its last nine games – all via shutout.

Coaches: Gino Casseri (Warsaw), Nicholas Drollette (Geneseo)

History 101: Warsaw defeated Geneseo, 2-0, on October 13th to sweep the season series. Warsaw is making its third consecutive sectional final appearance. The Tigers defeated Williamson, 2-1, to win the 2019 Class C1 title and fell to Avon, 1-0, in last season’s championship. Geneseo is back in the sectional final after winning Class C2 last year. The Blue Devils defeated Byron-Bergen, 2-1, for the title.

A 7:30 p.m. kickoff is scheduled at Caledonia-Mumford High School.
