Mercy and Spencerport played a soccer match October 9th and the Rangers scored midway through the second half to win 1-0.
“We thought we had to win more in the midfield, they’re a good passing team so, the last time we played them, we were a little bit concerned about not winning the midfield,” Rangers coach Jamie Schneider said after his team blew open a 2-0 halftime lead on the Monarchs to win 6-0 and move into the Class A1 finals and have a chance at a sixth straight sectional title.
13 minutes into the game, Aleena Solano sent a ball towards the net where Bre DeHond won a race with Mercy’s keeper and scored her 24th goal of the season.
The Rangers kept the pressure on and with 1:07 to play in the half, DeHond got in the right and fired the ball across, it deflected out towards the top of the box where Kathleen Fitzgerald deposited it for a 2-0 lead at the half.
“It was exciting because we knew it wasn’t going to be an easy game, “ DeHond said of the fast start.
The Rangers came out hot in the second half. Lily Brongo’s corner kick was knocked in by Lindsay Lenhard for a 3-0 lead.
A minute later, Jamie Keens sent a ball to DeHond for the senior’s second goal and the lead was doubled to 4-0.
“Just a great group of seniors who have learned a lot from the past about winning and Championships and now they’re all playing really well,” Schneider said.
The Rangers will play Brighton Saturday afternoon for a chance at their sixth sectional title and keep alive a chance at their first state title in four years.
“I think, with the teamwork that we have, everyone deserves a chance at the title and the State title too,” DeHond said.
