“We’re playing a little bit more technical, trying to possess and keep the ball and in the final third, we’re still struggling to get the ball in the net, so, hopefully, it’ll get better as the season goes.”
Pittsford Sutherland boys soccer coach Sean Hopkins watched his Knights dominate play, give up a couple of chances in the defensive end but come away with a 1-0 win over Brighton in a Saturday afternoon game.
Sutherland’s defense, which was composed for most of the game, gave away a break to Brighton’s Chase Alexandre but Carter Kladstrup stopped it.
The Knights nearly broke through late in the first half as Brighton cleared a ball that was sent to Henry Walbaum at the top of the box but his shot was stopped by Bruins keeper Cal Oberst.
Scoreless midway through the second half, Walbaum stole a ball on the right side of the Brighton defense and broke in alone on Oberst. He slid a cross to the middle where Ryan Petrone was all alone for the goal and a 1-0 lead.
The Bruins had a break immediately off the ensuing kick but the shot rang off the cross bar.
Kladstrup made only a couple of tough saves for the Knights (2-0), the biggest one coming when his own defender tried to head the ball back to him nearly scored.
Coming off a 3-0 victory over Brockport to open the season Thursday, Sutherland now has two days off to relax.
“We’ve been grinding now for two weeks, so that’s why the 1pm game, give them two days off and three days practice before our next game,” Hopkins said.
“We’re getting the chances, we’re just not getting it in the back of the net yet, but I think it will come, the more we play,” Hopkins added and it’ll be needed as their next opponent is rival Greece Athena on the road Friday.
