Rush-Henrietta junior Evan Brock ran for three touchdowns and threw for another as the Royal Comets fought off host Fairport, 32-14 to open the Section V football season.
Joey Giggie ran for 204 yards for the Red Raiders as both starting tailbacks played through injuries.
Giggie got things going with an 81-yard touchdown run up the right side.
The Royal Comets got things going with senior Jayden Scott running the ball but it was Brock hitting O.J. Singletary on a short pass and the junior turned it into a 49-yard score. The extra point was blocked leaving Fairport with a 7-6 lead.
With a minute and a half to play in the second quarter and Scott on the sidelines with severe cramps, Brock scored on a nine-yard keeper and the Royal Comets led 12-7 at the half.
The Red Raiders grabbed the lead back early in the third on Giggie’s second touchdown of the game.
That’s when Brock took over the game.
“A lot of poise. He’s gritty, he’s a competitor and he an unselfish kid and a great kid to have at the quarterback spot,” head coach Jason Collins said of Brock.
He scored on a three yard run in the third to get the lead back but it was in the fourth quarter, with Giggie also struggling with a lower leg injury, the Brock turned it up, breaking off a 38-yard touchdown with just under five minutes to play.
Singletary scored his second touchdown of the game on a 75 yard jet sweep with 1:27 to play.
“That’s a tough team, they are physical, that’s one of the best running backs we’re gonna see all year,” Collins said of Giggie and his teammates. “We weathered the storm a little bit and every time they punched us a little bit, we answered back so, it was a great start to our year.”
Brock finished with 118 yards passing and 93 yards rushing for Rush-Henrietta, who out-rushed Fairport by three yards as a team (256-253).
Rush-Henrietta plays their home opener against Pittsford next Friday while the Red Raiders travel to Aquinas.
