High School Girls’ Soccer: Monroe County Division IV Preview

Section V Girls’ Soccer gets into full swing this week. Here are the team previews for Batavia, Eastridge, Greece Odyssey, Greece Olympia and Honeoye Falls-Lima:

BATAVIA BLUE DEVILS (Class B1)

Last season record and finish: 5-7, lost in Class B1 sectional semifinals to Greece Olympia
Coach: Roger Hume (14th season)
Top returners: Maddie Barone Sr. GK (All-County First Team); Olivia Halpin Sr. MF (All-County First Team); Lily Miller Sr. D; Katherine Spiotta Sr. D; Anna Varland So. M; Isabella Walsh So. D (All-County Second Team)
Outlook: “We have seven solid seniors that all started last season, so we are returning a great core group,” Hume noted. “We have a good underclassmen group and three newcomers to the team. Our team will be small in numbers, but very skilled and I’m very excited to get the season started.”
First game: September 2nd vs. Geneva at 6 p.m.

EASTRIDGE LANCERS (Class A2)

Last season record and finish: 7-5, lost in first round of Class A sectionals to Greece Athena
Coach: Marc Dall (Seventh season)
Top returners: Isabella Barbosa Sr. GK/D; Nevaeh Bunch Jr. MF/F (17 career goals and 14 career assists, nine goals and five assists last season); Na’Dia Carter Jr. D; Sierra Manning Sr. F (39 career goals, 11 goals and five assists last season)
Top newcomers: Nora Miller Jr. GK
Outlook: “The team should challenge for the Monroe County Division IV title with a strong returning core and the addition of goalkeeper Nora Miller,” Dall stated. “Bunch and Manning make for a very dangerous attacking combo with 20 goals and 10 assists between the two in last year’s abbreviated season. Manning has been contacted by numerous Division I schools and is working on making her decision by the fall signing period.”
First game: September 4th vs. Greece Olympia at 11 a.m.

GREECE ODYSSEY LEOPARDS (Class B1)

Last season record and finish: 3-8-1, lost in first round of Class B1 sectionals to Hornell
Coach: Victoria Salomone (Fourth season, first season on Varsity)
Top returners: Aleah Greene Sr. MF/F (Three career goals and four career assists); Sienna Tyo Sr. MF/F (20 career goals and 10 career assists); Ekemini Udofa So. F (19 career goals)
Top newcomers: Isabella Nuciolo So. D
Outlook: “This will be a rebuilding year due to change in staff,” Salamone commented. “We’re a very young team with eight freshmen.”
First game: September 8th at Warsaw at 6 p.m.

GREECE OLYMPIA SPARTANS (Class B1)

Last season record and finish: 4-9-1, lost in Class B1 sectional final to Hornell
Coach: Danielle Boneberg (16th season)
Top returners: Kuditra DeRosa Sr. F (Led Monroe County in points scored); Laynee Hysner Sr. D (All-County First Team); Morgan Welch Sr. MF (Two-time All-County)
Top newcomers: Kyleigh Bathe 8th G. D; Hannah Roxstrom Fr. D/MF; Sarah Tawaf Fr. MF/F
Outlook: “We’re looking for a competitive and healthy season and hope to make it to our third consecutive sectional final,” Boneberg said.
First game: September 4th at Eastridge at 11 a.m.

HONEOYE FALLS-LIMA COUGARS (Class A2)

Last season record and finish: 11-1, lost in Class A sectional quarterfinals to Churchville-Chili
Coach: Christine Merrill (20th season, 16th season on Varsity, 167-87-18 career record)
Top returners: Kailey Annesi Sr. D/MF; Maria Karipidis Jr. D/MF (Division IV Player of the Year, All-County First Team); Izabela Woloszuk Jr. D/MF (All-County Second Team)
Top newcomers: Katie Adams So. MF/F; Bria Torpey Fr. D/MF
Outlook: “HF-L is looking for some young players to step in to fill the spots of 12 graduated seniors,” Merrill stated. “Along with many new players, the Cougars also return a few top All-County players which will help the program compete in this rebuilding year.”
First game: September 1st at Livonia at 6:30 p.m.
