Tribune Catching Academy’s UBL Friday: DII Red uses big fourth for victory; Poligone’s triple helps Red clinch undefeated regular season

DII RED (2-5) 7
Jacob Murray (Penfield) hurled three shutout innings in relief to pick up the win, and DII Red used a big fourth to come from behind. Murray struck out six while allowing two hits and one walk for his first win of the season. The right-hander nine of the 12 batters he faced.

Tim Leary (Northstar Christian) plated a pair to highlight a four-run fourth. Trailing 2-1 Leary connected on a double that brought home Alec Mustico (Webster Thomas) and Parker Goodness (Greece Athena) with the go-ahead run. JoJo Guisto (Fairport) followed with an RBI groundout, and Gavin DeBlase (Brighton) capped the inning with an RBI double.

Mustico added two RBI in the game. Murray scored a run and drove in another. Trey Rankin III (Greece Athena) worked two-thirds of an inning to pick up his first save of the summer.

Jacob Natale (Penfield) paced the DII Blue offense going 3-for-4 with an RBI. Nicholas O’Toole (Greece Athena) walked twice and scored twice. Anthony Getty (Hilton) added an RBI. Dylan Dumont (Webster Schroeder) and Brady Beganny collected a single apiece. Colin MacLean (Pittsford Sutherland) and Brady Parker (Greece Arcadia) both scored a run.

DI RED (7-0-1) 6
Cooper Romich (Churchville-Chili hurled four shutout innings to pick up the win, and Red erased an early deficit for the win. Romich struck out eight and allowed two hits in his first appearance on the mound this summer. James Poligone’s (Fairport) two-out triple in the fifth proved to be the difference.   Trailing 4-3 after four innings, Nathan Zicari (Webster Thomas) reached on a one-out error and later scored the tying run on a Steve Kraus (Hilton) base hit. Parker Drees (Greece Arcadia) walked, and Poligone followed with his first triple of the summer.

Tobey Wright (Rush-Henrietta) tripled and drove in a run for Red. Patrick Altpeter (Aquinas) doubled and scored.  Romich added a hit, a walk and an RBI. Ben Kazel (Brighton) both walked twice and scored a run.

Dylan Hodgeman (Rush-Henrietta) and Josh Winter (Spencerport) singled and scored a run for DI Gold. Cooper Bates (Hilton) and Ian Fleck (McQuaid Jesuit) scored a run apiece.

Red will be the top seed and play DI Orange in the opening round of the 2021 UBL playoffs that start Saturday. DI Gold takes on DI Blue. The winners of those two games meet in Monday’s championship.
