Tribune Catching Academy’s Saturday UBL Semifinals Wrap: Haarr paces DI Blue with arm and bat; DiFranco, Kraus and Wright lead DI Red shutout

Blake Bucenec (Fairport), Jack Salerno (Brighton) and Henry Shutts combined to drive in seven runs as DI Blue accumulated 14 base knocks to advance to Monday’s championship game. Bucenec led with a fielder’s choice which scored Brian Nassivera (Greece Arcadia) in the fourth inning and a seventh-inning, two-run double. Salerno added an RBI double and a sacrifice fly. Shutts went 3-of-4 at the dish with a pair of singles, including one to plate Christian Morrison (Palmyra-Macedon), and a run-scoring double. Gavin Haarr (Brockport) and Morrison both scored two runs, drew a walk and collected an RBI in three at-bats. Mason Haarr doubled, singled, drove in a run and drew a walk at the plate and whiffed eight batters in five frames of one-hit ball on the mound. The right-hander retired nine of the first 10 hitters he faced as well. Overall, Haarr limited the damage to two runs, including one earned, and a pair of walks.

For DI Gold, Jack Cannon (Webster Schroeder) and Joshua Winter (Spencerport) both drove in a run. Cannon put the team on the board with an RBI triple in the fourth. Cannon fanned four batters in two scoreless innings as well.

Calvin Rogers (Bloomfield) had three strikeouts in three frames of relief. DI Blue advances to the championship game to take on DI Red. Game is scheduled for Monday at 8 p.m.

No. 1 DI RED (8-0) 4
Tommy DiFranco (Penfield), Steven Kraus (Hilton) and Tobey Wright (Rush-Henrietta) combined for 12 strikeouts en route to a two-hit shutout for DI Red. Kraus started the contest with five strikeouts in four hitless frames.

Wright came in relief and recorded all six of his outs via strikeout. Then DiFranco secured the victory with a scoreless inning. Zachary Harnischfeger (Greece Athena) and Cooper Romich (Churchville-Chili) both collected a base knock and an RBI in three plate appearances to lead the offense. Ben Kazel (Brighton) and Wright both legged out a pair of hits. Wright scored two runs as well.

For DI Orange, Weston Elkovich (Victor) and Antonio Jorge accounted for the team’s lone base knocks. On the mound, Jorge fanned three batters in five innings of work. DI Red advances to the championship game to take on DI Blue. Game is scheduled for Monday at 8 p.m.
