Starting in all 44 regular-season games, Cowles hit .302 with 23 extra-base hits including 17 home runs. He drove in 49 runs and scored another 38. His slugging percentage of .660 ranks third in the Big Ten. His 17 round-trippers sit fifth in Maryland program single-season history. The junior shortstop finished with a .963 fielding percentage over 189 total chances.
Cowles earned Big Ten Player of the Week earlier this season when he connected on five round-trippers as part of a 6-for-14 week.
A two-time Finger Lakes East Player of the Year, he hit .512 with an on-base percentage of .650 for Mike McGavisk’s Newark Reds in 2018. Cowles earned Section V Class B Player of the Year as well as Class B First-Team All-State honors.
Maryland earned a No. 3 seed in the Greenville Region and will open the NCAA Tournament against Charlotte. A 6 p.m. EST first pitch is scheduled for Friday, June 4. ESPN3 will air the game.
