Rochester Red Wings manager Matthew LeCroy remarked Thursday that his starting pitchers were not going as deep into their outings as he would like.
Rochester did not reverse the trend on Friday evening, when Steven Fuentes left after facing one batter in the second inning with an apparent injury. The right-hander allowed three runs on three Scranton/Wilkes-Barre hits in the first inning and was saddled with the loss after the Red Wings never rallied, falling 6-3 at Frontier Field.
Rob Brantly and Armando Alvarez jumped on Fuentes early with home runs, a two-run and solo shot respectively. Rafael Bautista got a home run back for Rochester, but RailRiders starter Mike Montgomery surrendered just three hits and struck out eight. The Red Wings managed four total hits, two days after being held to three hits in their last defeat.
Carter Kieboom walked three times for Rochester, upping his season total to six, but the Wings struck out 12 times; Luis García was set down on three occasions. The Red Wings and RailRiders are scheduled for a 5:05 first pitch on Saturday evening, with highly-touted Yankees prospect Deivi García on the mound for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
