Girls lacrosse is a game of runs. Well, really, what game isn’t?

Brighton and Spencerport put that old adage on display Tuesday night with the Bruins getting the final run, winning 10-8.

After Molly Guzik got the Rangers on the board first, Brighton ran off the next four goals. Sophomore Elise Murphy scored twice and junior Lexi Atwater, a last-minute starter, scored her first of the game.

From there, Spencerport went on their run. Isabella Buono scored and Guzik scored off the ensuing draw to cut the lead to 4-3.

Senior Lily DePalma then scored twice in the final 37 seconds of the first half and Spencerport led 5-4 at the half.

“I was definitely concerned, “ said Bruins coach Rich Curtis. “They (Spencerport) played well and our girls lost it for about 5-7 minutes there.”

DePalma and Guzik each completed their hat tricks while finishing off a six-goal run for a 7-4 lead.

Then it was the Bruins’ turn to make the run.

Atwater’s second bounced between the feet of the Rangers’ keeper, then Delaney McManus hit Atwater cutting to the net and the lead was 7-6.

“We got it together, did a nice job on the draw and a started finishing some shots,” Curtis said.

Murphy then fed Maeve Diefendorf cutting to the goal to knot the game at 7-7.

With four minutes left, senior Hailey Rooney ran right and cut the lead to 9-8.

But the Bruins ran out the rest of the clock, Atwater hitting an empty net with 45 seconds to play for the final goal.

For Brighton, it was their fourth win in five games, evening their record at 5-5.

“Most of these kids didn’t play for me two years ago, she (Spencerport coach Trisha Condon) has the same problem, the whole league has the same problem. I think that’s why you’re seeing some very strange scores, everyone’s trying to get their kids on board,” Curtis said.

The Rangers are 4-3 with games against Rush-Henrietta and Irondequoit up next. The Bruins face Webster Thomas before facing Penfield for the second time this season, the Patriots won the first game 9-8.
