Brighton senior softball stars Ainsley and Cassidy Evanetski are twins, normally that puts opponents at a disadvantage.
And while the Bruins have had the advantage over most of their opponents this season, coach Jim Purtell says that unspoken bond isn’t the reason.
“They’re so different, their personalities are so different.”
The reason lies in their softball IQ. The sisters allowed three hits and no walks over five innings in a 20-1 win over Spencerport on Monday. Ainsley struck out 10 through four innings and Cassidy pitched the final inning for Brighton (10-2).
The Bruins sent 11 batters to plate in the first and 16 more in third inning. Isabella Rozzi had a two-run single in the first while Maggie Smith had a three-run double and Cassidy Evanetski a two-run double to left to key a 12-run third.
Ainsely earned MVP honors as the Bruins won the 2019 Class A softball title, making them the reigning champions. The sisters have committed to play for Bari Mance and St. John Fisher next year.
“She’s been pitching varsity since eighth grade so she’s been in a lot of big situations,” says Purtell. “She loves her teammates, she wants to play for them. They’re both great athletes and played on varsity since eighth grade.”
The Rangers scored their run in the fourth as Sami Moschettieri hit a fly ball to center, scoring Tori Guary from third.
Brighton sits second in the Class A1 standings behind Irondequoit. The Bruins and Eagles don’t play each other this regular season, instead, Brighton is playing Class AA’s top teams.
“This is good because we don’t really see these teams, just the unknown is great, it’s kinda a test within itself, “ says Purtell. “And then Sectionals, it’s another unknown, it’s not like we can see other games with COVID.”
Brighton faces Hilton on Wednesday and Penfield on Friday, both games on the road.
