Victor’s defense held Fairport to one second half goal leading the Blue Devils to a 10-6 victory and a 3-0 start to the season.

“It’s awesome going against them in practice and then they just light it up on game day, ” senior middie Cal Lambert says of his teammates.

The two teams took turns with the lead in the first quarter. University of Albany-bound defenseman Connor Fundis got it started with a steal for the Red Raiders and the score.

Later in the first Alex Seiler tied the game at two for the Blue Devils. Logan Callahan, Victor’s faceoff specialist and a disciple of All-American TD Ierlan, won at the “X” and scored for a 3-2 lead. Callahan is heading to Johns Hopkins this fall.

Nine seconds later, Lambert netted his second of the game to go with two assists for a 5-3 lead.

The lead grew to 7-4 on Lambert’s third of the game before Rob Crowley scored on a man-up to leave a 7-5 halftime score.

Fairport’s next goal came midway through the fourth quarter.

The Victor defense locked down the Raiders from there, including a shutout of high-scoring Kole Stuver by Michael Mitchko.

“Stuver’s got great feet, shifting back and forth and Michael held his ground, he may have the best feet on our team,” first-year head coach Dan Stone said.

Junior goalie Zach Pavia stopped six shots, most of them in the second half and allowed no goals in the third quarter.

“He’s a kid whose waited his turn, he’s dealt with adversity and he’s figured it out and he puts in the time. He’s becoming the leader we needed him and wanted him to be,” Stone says of Pavia.

Lambert scored his fourth goal while Liam Erwin and Sam Gotham also netted third quarter goals to push the lead to 10-5. Trey Terzo finished the scoring for Fairport (2-2) in the fourth.

“The defense was sliding to me a lot early so, a lot of open guys in the crease, just feeding guys early. My teammates make it look easy for me,” said Lambert, who will play at West Point for Army next year.

Up next for the Blue Devils is Irondequoit on Friday while the Red Raiders travel to Penfield.
