Brockport and Greece Arcadia played two different games, on the same baseball diamond, at the same time on Monday.
The Blue Devils eventually won 9-3 but for the first four and a half innings, it was a pitcher’s duel between Brockport senior Nick Johnson and Titans junior Tyler Reichert.
Brockport got on the board first in the bottom of the third when Tyler Henshaw scored with the bases loaded on a wild pitch.
Arcadia answered back in the top of the fourth when Parker Drees singled to lead off the inning, stole second, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on Reichert’s ground out to second base.
Johnson struck out the side in the fifth, allowing just two hits, walking one and striking out 11 before reaching his pitch count.
“He’s one of the few guys that has some experience on the bump for us, “ coach Matt Davis said, “We preach putting the ball in play and when you get strikeouts, that’s a little bit extra.”
In the bottom of the fifth, with Reichert also at his pitch count, Cooper Hassall singled to lead off and Johnson struck out but reached on a passed ball, and Will Cole hit a ball deep to right center for a two-run triple.
Pat Kiesow hit a sacrifice fly to left scoring Cole and Jacob Cole scored on a wild pitch for a four-run inning and a 5-1 lead.
The Titans got two runs back with Drees and Jacob Tsymbal scoring runs. Arcadia had the bases loaded but Ryan Judd got a strikeout to end the threat.
The Blue Devils tacked on four more in the bottom of the sixth, two on another Cole extra base hit, this time a double.
“Will, the last couple of games, had been struggling at the plate. He had a good approach, looked for the fast ball early and it was good to see he got one to drive, “ Davis said of Cole and his four RBIs.
Brockport (2-3) needed a win after two of their three losses this season have come in one-run games to Irondequoit and Greece Athena.
Davis says, “We just need to get experience playing the game. The more we get out there and see live pitching and put ourselves into different situations, we’re gonna be better off for it in the end.”
With Arcadia’s diamond under construction, the teams will play again Wednesday at Brockport with the Blue Devils hosting Eastridge Friday and the Titans hosting HF-L at Greece Olympia.
