The final week of the Section V Football regular season has arrived and there is still much to be decided regarding the playoff picture. Here is what is at stake in every classification:

Class AA – Hilton, McQuaid and Victor are jockeying for the top seed in sectionals. The Blue Devils and Knights are undefeated as well. If one or both of these teams lose, either could fall to the No. 3 seed if Hilton defeats Fairport. Aquinas, Pittsford and Rush-Henrietta all have 3-2 records and are in a must-win scenario for the last playoff spot.

Class A – This classification could see the most movement because of how crowded the top of the standings are. Going into Sunday afternoon’s games, there are six teams in contention for the four sectionals spots – three who are undefeated (Canandaigua, Irondequoit and Spencerport) and two with one loss (East and Greece Athena) and one with three wins (Brighton).

Class B – With the top two spots locked up by Batavia and Honeoye Falls-Lima, it’s down to Palmyra-Macedon and Wayne for the exact seeding of No. 3 and No. 4. Since Wayne defeated Palmyra-Macedon in the season opener, the Red Raiders must somehow take down the Blue Devils at VanDetta Stadium to clinch the No. 3 seed.

Class C – Similar to Class AA, Bath-Haverling, LeRoy and Livonia are fighting for the top seed. The Bulldogs and Oatkan Knights will face each other Monday night to decide it. Whichever team loses could fall to the No. 3 seed if Bath-Haverling defeats Mynderse. Regarding the final playoff spot, with its loss plus Attica’s win last week, Waterloo is in a must-win scenario against Marcus Whitman/Bloomfield. Attica must defeat Dansville to keep its slim playoff chances alive as well.

Class D – Oakfield-Alabama/Elba and Avon match up for the top seed in sectionals. If Oakfield-Alabama/Elba loses, it could fall down to the No. 4 seed due to Canisteo-Greenwood completing the regular season with only five games played. Alexander, Bolivar-Richburg, Caledonia-Mumford/Byron-Bergen and Geneseo/Mount Morris are all in contention for the final two playoff spots as well.

GAME OF THE WEEK: LIVONIA VS. LEROY

These have been two of the best football teams in the entire Rochester area all spring long. Both of these squads have completely dominated their competition and hold a strong argument for the favorite to win sectionals. Now, they must put everything together into this game to finish undefeated and as the possible No. 1 seed.

Livonia hasn’t let the fact that it moved down from Class B despite winning sectionals deter its focus. Not only have they won every game by double digits, the Bulldogs have beaten their opponents by a combined score of 207-50. They have scored the third-most points in Section V behind Red Jacket (310) and Batavia (209). Senior running back Alexander Minnehan leads the team with 907 rushing yards and nine touchdowns.

Defense has been the staple for LeRoy in what has been a bounce-back season after falling in the sectional final 17 months ago. The Oatkan Knights had the opportunity to avenge the loss in their previous game with a 35-7 victory over Letchworth/Warsaw. The defense started the season by pitching three consecutive shutouts over Attica, Dansville and Wellsville. Overall, the Knights have only allowed 21 points all season, which has come in the last two games. Only Honeoye Falls-Lima has allowed less points (nine in four games). The Knights have a strong offense as well with 169 points scored (33.8 points per game).

Something will have to give due to these teams featuring explosive offenses and stingy defenses. Kickoff is set for Monday at 7 p.m. at LeRoy Junior/Senior High School.

OTHER MATCHUPS TO LOOK OUT FOR…..

Canandaigua at Greece Athena – Whoever loses this game will officially be eliminated from playoff contention due to Brighton playing East High. This will be Canandaigua’s first game in 12 days due to players contracting COVID-19. The Braves are one of 11 Section V teams that remain undefeated. Sam Bennett (203 receiving yards and four touchdowns), Bryan Boldrin (550 passing yards and seven touchdowns) and Dominic Comella (312 rushing yards and five touchdowns) spearhead the offense. Although Greece Athena isn’t a high-scoring team, its defense has been solid (49 points allowed for 9.8 points per game). Of those points, 21 came against Irondequoit, which had poured in a combined 98 points in its first two contests. Kickoff is set for Monday at 7 p.m. at Greece Athena High School.

Oakfield-Alabama/Elba at Avon – This game will determine the top seed in Class D for sectionals. Oakfield-Alabama/Elba bounced back from a tough loss to Bolivar-Richburg with a 54-0 domination of York/Pavilion. The Aggies, who have poured 204 points in five games so far (40.8 points per game), are led by Ty Mott (1,112 rushing yards and 18 touchdowns). Avon moved down from Class C and has remained the only undefeated team in this classification. The Braves have outscored their opponents, 127-36, and defeated Clyde-Savannah last week. Kickoff is set for Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Avon High School.

Brighton at East High – Whoever wins this game will automatically qualify for sectionals due to the amount of points each team has. East High has done its part to remain in the thick of the sectional race. After dropping their season opener to Greece Athena, the Eagles have won four straight and are in a must-win scenario against Brighton. The Barons are coming off a 28-14 victory over Gates-Chili. Kickoff is set for Monday at 6 p.m. at East High School.

Pittsford at Victor – Both of these teams are in a must-win scenario. Pittsford holds the same record as Aquinas and Rush-Henrietta for the final playoff spot. The Panthers are coming off a huge road win over the Royal Comets and must pull off another one over Victor. The Blue Devils cruised past Monroe to remain undefeated and tied with McQuaid for the No. 2 seed in Class AA. Kickoff is set for Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Victor High School.
