Bolivar-Richburg entered Thursday’s contest having been shut out by Geneseo/Mount Morris and only scoring seven points against Canisteo-Greenwood. Despite only putting up 14 points and 137 yards in this game, it was just enough for the Wolverines’ defense.
Bolivar-Richburg limited Oakfield-Alabama/Elba, Section V’s most potent offense, to 228 total yards in a 14-8 victory, its first win of the season.
Logan Bess, Brayden Ellis and Kadin Tompkins provided all the Wolverines’ scoring. With the game still scoreless in the third quarter, Hudson Evingham ignited a drive with a 15-yard reception and a 14-yard dash. Ellis applied the dagger himself with a four-yard throw to Bess for a 7-0 lead.
On the ensuing play, Tompkins hustled to recover a muffed kick in the end zone to extend the lead to 14-0.
The Wolverines’ defense rewarded their offense by accumulating 46 tackles, two interceptions and a sack. Evingham led with nine tackles. The 6-foot-2 senior had the most offensive yards as well with 69 rushing yards on 16 carries.
Trent Sibble followed up with six and a half tackles, including a quarterback sack. Landon Danaher and Ellis both recorded a pair of tackles and one interception. Danaher’s pick was for six yards.
Offensively, Ellis went 7-of-10 for 51 yards. Tompkins hauled in a 19-yard catch.
For Oakfield-Alabama/Elba, Bodie Hyde connected with Kaden Cusmano on a touchdown in the final period for the Aggies’ lone points of the game. The touchdown was one of Cusmano’s two catches which totaled 26 yards. Hyde completed 5-of-8 passes for 55 yards. The freshman quarterback has thrown for 186 yards through four games.
Senior running back Ty Mott led the ground game with 135 yards on 29 carries to bring his season total to 901. Senior defensive lineman Peyton Yasses led with nine tackles. Hyde snagged an interception.
“Between some of the mistakes we made and the plays that Bolivar-Richburg made, we didn’t earn the right to win tonight’s game,” Oakfield-Alabama/Elba head coach Tyler Winter said. “Hats off to Bolivar-Richburg. They are well coached team and they played hard for four quarters.
“We need to learn from tonight. There is a lot we can take away from this game if we are going to reach the potential we believe this team is capable of. We’ll watch film, grow from our mistakes and we’re onto the next challenge.”
Both teams’ next game is next Wednesday at 6 p.m. Bolivar-Richburg (1-2) travels to take on archrival Cuba-Rushford. Oakfield-Alabama/Elba (3-1) will host York/Pavilion.
