Top 25 Wrap: Drake Remains Perfect; Texas Tech Defeats Sooners in low-scoring affair

In its first game in the AP Top 25 since 2008, senior Tremell Murphy led Drake with a career-high 30 point, eight-rebound performance shooting 10-15 from the field, and 6-10 from three. Fellow senior ShanQuan Hemphill had 18 points, five rebounds, and three assists.

After surviving a two-point win in overtime last night against the Redbirds, the Bulldogs responded with 56 second-half points, winning the points in the paint battle 40 to 24.

Drake shot 51.5 percent (35-68) as a team and 85.7 percent from the free-throw line compared to Illinois State’s 40 percent, (24-60) and 54.5 percent. The Bulldogs also maintained a slight edge in rebounds 39 to 33, as well as doubling their assists 25 to 11.

Antonio Reeves was the Redbird leading scorer with 20, and DJ Horne contributed with 11.

After winning 69-67 against Oklahoma on December 22nd, Texas Tech picked up their second narrow victory versus the Sooners this season. The Big XII rivals shot a combined 33 percent and both eclipsed over 10 turnovers in the defensive battle. In the first 20 minutes of play, both teams combined for 43 points with Texas Tech up seven going into intermission.

Red Raiders’ leading scorer Mac McClung, who averages 17.5 points per game and scored 16 in their previous matchup against the Sooners, was held scoreless in the first half. His first points came on two made free-throws with 8:50 left. McClung did not record a made field goal, shooting 0-7 from the field but 6-6 from the charity stripe. 

Kevin McCullar and Terrence Shannon Jr. led the way for Texas Tech as McCullar posted seven of his 13 points in the first half with eight rebounds. Shannon Jr. had 15 points off the bench shooting 50 percent and converting two free throws with 14 seconds remaining to push the lead to four.

The Red Raiders went 18-22 as a team from the free-throw line and held a 39 to 32 rebound advantage. Oklahoma had a 7:39 stretch with no field goals late in the second half, as Texas Tech had an 8-0 run. 

The loss snaps a five-game win streak for Oklahoma, winning their past three against teams ranked in the top 10 on the AP Poll.

Guard Umoja Gibson contributed with 14 points for the Sooners on 3-6 shooting from three, leading the team in points, rebounds (seven), and assists (one). De’Vion Harmon and Brady Manek both had double-digit performances.
