One team is looking to win its first sectional title in a decade. The other is seeking to secure back-to-back championships. Division rivals Penfield and Fairport will meet Wednesday to decide the 2020 Section V Class AA Boys’ Soccer Championship. Here’s the breakdown:
No. 1 seed PENFIELD PATRIOTS (12-0-0/Monroe County Division I) vs. No. 3 seed FAIRPORT RED RAIDERS (8-4-0/Monroe County Division I)
How they got here: Penfield opened sectional play with a 4-nil win over eighth-seeded Webster Schroeder in the quarterfinals. The Patriots continued with a 6-nil shutout of No. 5 seed Victor in the semifinals. Fairport shut out sixth-seeded Rush-Henrietta, 8-nil, in the quarterfinals and defeated No. 2 seed McQuaid, 3-1.

Last time they met: Mark Zilist volleyed in the difference maker at the 10 minute-mark as Penfield beat Fairport, 1-nil, on Halloween.

History 101: Penfield is making its first sectional final appearance since 2011 when as a No. 2 seed, the Patriots fell to top-seeded Webster Schroeder, 1-nil, in Class AAA. The Patriots are seeking their 20th sectional title and first sectional title since 2010 when they finished as co-champions with Schroeder. Fairport shared the sectional title last season and advanced to the NYS finals. The Red Raiders are seeking their fifth title in the past decade and first under Teasdale. The Red Raiders have won 10 sectional titles in program history. This is the first head-to-head meeting between Penfield and Fairport in sectionals since the 2014 semifinals when the Red Raiders shut out the Patriots, 5-nil.
A 7 p.m. kickoff is scheduled at Penfield High School.
