Semifinal Preview: Boys’ Soccer Class AA

A divisional rival matchup and rematch of last season’s sectional final highlight the semifinal round of Section V Class AA boys’ soccer. Both contests kick off Monday evening. Here’s the breakdown:

No. 1 seed PENFIELD PATRIOTS (11-0-0/Monroe County Division I) vs. No. 5 seed VICTOR BLUE DEVILS (6-5-0/Monroe County Division I)

How they got here: Penfield opened sectional play with a 4-nill win over eighth-seeded Webster Schroeder in the quarterfinals. Victor beat fourth-seeded Hilton, 2-1.

Total goals scored: Penfield (37), Victor (14)

Total goals allowed: Penfield (4), Victor (15)

Last time they met: Shane McMillan netted a pair of goals to pace Penfield to a 4-nill road victory on November 4th.

Trends: Penfield has pitched five consecutive shutouts and outscored their opponents, 13-0, in that span. Victor has rebounded from a three-game skid with back-to-back road wins

Names to know: Penfield – Chris McLean (Jr. goalkeeper 10 saves/362 minutes in goal), Shane McMillan (Jr. attacker 15 goals/6 assists), Joe Vogt (Sr. defender 7 goals/2 assists), Mark Zilist (Sr. attacker 5 goals/1 assist)

Victor – Connor Cronin (Jr. goalkeeper 54 saves/13 goals allowed), Max Fiorica (Sr. midfielder 7 goals/2 assists), Thomas Gravino (So. midfielder 3 goals/2 assists)

Coaches: John Cotsonas (Penfield), Steve Fish (Victor)

No. 2 seed MCQUAID JESUIT KNIGHTS (9-0-1/Rochester City Athletic Conference) vs. No. 3 seed FAIRPORT RED RAIDERS (7-4-0/Monroe County Division I)

How they got here: McQuaid opened sectional play with a 4-nill win over seventh-seeded Gates-Chili in the quarterfinals. Fairport shut out sixth-seeded Rush-Henrietta, 8-nill.

Total goals scored: McQuaid (28), Fairport (28)

Total goals allowed: McQuaid (7), Fairport (10)

Last time they met: Fairport outlasted McQuaid in last year’s sectional final. The game ended in a 1-all tie before the Red Raiders won via penalty kicks, 7-6.

Trends: McQuaid has reeled off five straight wins since tying with Canisius (Monsignor Martin) on October 24th. Fairport has won four of five.
