The 2020 season gets underway this weekend with divisional matchups. Here is the breakdown for Monroe County Division I:
FAIRPORT LADY RED RAIDERS (Class AA)
Last season record and finish: 10-6-2, lost in sectional semifinals to Penfield
Coach: Thomas Natalie (10th season, 115-40-11 career record)
Top returners: Heather Cuminale Jr. MF/F; Katie Diem Jr. MF (All-County First Team); Lilian Hicks Sr. D (All-County First Team); Kayla Maxwell Sr. D (All-County Second Team); Brigid Mulholland So. GK
Top newcomers: Morgan Donovan So. D; Olivia Kayser Fr. MF/F; Isabella Pucci So. F; Erica Yancey Jr. MF
Outlook: “We return an experienced defense and a talented young goalkeeper. Diem has been battling in the center midfield spot against many great players that now have graduated. Hicks is an offensive spark from the back. Mulholland is as technically sound as it gets in the net.”
First game: October 10th at Victor at 6:30 p.m.
HILTON LADY CADETS (Class AA)
Last season record and finish: 8-6-4, lost in sectional semifinals to Webster Schroeder
Coach: Rick Trabold (First season at Hilton High School; 61-60-6 career record in 11 seasons at Greece Olympia High School)
Top returners: Victoria Cangialosi Sr. GK; Sydney Hayward Sr. MF; Emma Spelman Sr. MF; Brooke Wilson Sr. MF
Top newcomers: Audrey Brown Sr. MF; Katelyn Korzenieski Jr. D; Rylie Letta Jr. MF; Caitlin Nelson Jr. F; Brynn Sidebotham Jr. F
Outlook: “We return two quality keepers and field a sound defensive core. Our strength is a deep, technically skilled midfield group. We have speed and aggressiveness up top with a mix of returners and some exciting talent up from junior varsity. We’ll train hard and expect to compete at a high level.”
First game: October 10th vs. Rush-Henrietta at 6:30 p.m.
PENFIELD LADY PATRIOTS (Class AA)
Last season record and finish: 13-2-4, lost in NYS Far West Regional to Clarence (VI)
Coach: Libbie Tobin (19th season, 183-111-39 career record)
Top returners: Anna Carpenter Sr. CM; Lily Casey Sr. D; Courtney Felton Jr. MF/F; Natalie Giunta Jr. CM; Kendal Scanlon Sr. MF/F; Delaney Tellex So. F
Outlook: “We have a great combination of veteran players combined with strong incoming players from junior varsity.”
First game: October 10th at Webster Schroeder at 2 p.m.
VICTOR BLUE DEVILS (Class AA)
Last season record and finish: 5-13, lost in quarters to Schroeder 1-0
Coach: Kelly Ahern (14th season)
Top returners: Olivia DeYoung Sr. D; Abby Samson Sr. D; Ella Lesniak Sr. MF; Paige Ford Jr. D; Maggie Galewski Jr. MF; Sydney McKinnon Jr. MF
Outlook: “The key for all teams starting out is to stay healthy. The level of competition in our area is very high. I believe there is a hunger in these girls because they have not played in so long; there was no travel, there were not really club games. They miss it and they are excited to play. I think we will see many games that look like a sectional final because they all know that any day could be their last day to play.”
First game: October 10th vs. Fairport at 2 p.m.
WEBSTER SCHROEDER LADY WARRIORS (Class AA)
Last season record and finish: 15-0-4, tied with Penfield in sectional final (lost on penalty kicks)
Coach: Kent Brown (29th season, 279-163-68 career record)
Top returners: Ashley Jacobs Sr. MF/S (All-County First Team); Erika Lawson Sr. MF (All-County Second Team); Emma Leonardo Sr. DM (All-County First Team); Mikayla Morelli Sr. D (All-County First Team); Sidney Smith Sr. D (All-County Second Team)
Outlook: “We have 13 seniors back which should help us deal with the ups and downs of a shortened season. We will need to learn how to replace the impact that Anna Hewlett had on the team from goal scoring to team leadership. Just about every game is a one goal battle. In a shortened season, it is anybody’s game to win the division title and Class AA title. Dealing with COVID and a shortened season, the team that finds the most success will be the team that adapts to their given situation the quickest and is able to put aside all the distractions taking place outside of their seasons.”
First game: October 10th vs. Penfield at 2 p.m.
RUSH-HENRIETTA ROYAL COMETS (Class AA)
Last season record and finish: 7-10, lost to Fairport in Class AA quarter-finals, 3-2.
Coach: Michael Seidel
Top returners: Brooke Cicoria Sr. D/MF; Oumou Donzo Sr. F; Courtney Rowe Sr. F/MF
First game: October 10th at Hilton, 2 p.m.
