Teams from Monroe County Division III have won six sectional titles in the past five years including last season when Greece Athena took the Class A1 title and Pittsford Sutherland the A2 title. The 2020 season gets into full swing this weekend with divisional matchups. Here’s the breakdown:
BROCKPORT BLUE DEVILS (Class A)
Last season record and finish: 5-11-1, lost in first round of sectionals to Canandaigua
Coach: Jeffrey Phillips (Third season)
Top returners: Cole Beardsley Sr. F (All-County Second Team); Jacob Miller Jr. MF; Dom Viola Sr. D
First game: October 10th at Pittsford Mendon at 5 p.m.

CANANDAIGUA BRAVES (Class A)
Last season record and finish: 5-13, lost in sectional quarterfinals to Spencerport
Coach: Mark Annesi (20th season, 158-148-30)
Top returners: Sean Borkholder Sr. D; Aidan Furmansky Jr. MF; Oliver Harvieux Sr. MF; Reilly Joseph Sr. MF/F; Ryan Kurowski Sr. D; Dominick Spychalski Jr. F; Luke Viggiani Sr. MF/F
Outlook: “We have some solid experience returning this year. Many saw valuable minutes last season at the varsity level. We have superb kids who work extremely hard, are focused and play very well together as a team. We have a tough schedule, but feel that it will help prepare us down the road.”

GREECE ARCADIA TITANS (Class A)
Last season record and finish: 12-7, lost in sectional final to Greece Athena
Coach: Matt Vergamini (17th season, 150-72-22 career record)

Outlook: “We lost a lot of scoring in All-County First Team players Cooper LaValley and Camden Englert. We return every starting defender and keeper from last year. We’ll need to have several players step up this year to fill the scoring void. ”

GREECE ATHENA TROJANS (Class A)
Last season record and finish: 18-2-2, lost in NYS Class A Final to Jericho (VIII)
Coach: Michael Butler (Seventh season, 83-32-9 career record)

PITTSFORD MENDON VIKINGS (Class A)
Last season record and finish: 12-5-2, lost to Wayne on PKs in the Class A semi-finals
Coach: Mark Hurley (18th season, 209-82-36)

Top Newcomer: Simon Goldstein Jr.
Outlook: “To have this kind of a year (with the impacts of COVID-19) and not know what’s going to take place, they’re the right group for it. They are understanding, mature, intelligent and appreciative of what they’re getting an opportunity to do. I think they’ll do it right because they’re just that kind of group.”

PITTSFORD SUTHERLAND KNIGHTS (Class A)
Last season record and finish: 17-2-1, lost in NYS Class A Regional Qualifiers to Greece Athena
Coach: Sean Hopkins (Eighth season, 79-41-14 career record)

Outlook: “We are an older, more experienced team this year with all juniors and seniors on the roster. We’re looking forward to players stepping up and battling every day in practice to win jobs. We are excited to have the opportunity to play this fall and look forward to making the best of it.”
