Visiting hitting instructor, Terry Crowley joked about a uniform change. Manager Frank Verdi decided the last shall be first, and the cellar-dwelling Rochester Red Wings pulled out a rare victory.

Verdi moved Bobby Bonner from his usual ninth spot in the batting order to lead off. The Wings shortstop responded with four of the home nine’s 14 hits in an 8-1 drubbing of Pawtucket in front of 3,261 at Silver Stadium.

Bonner scored three runs and drove in another with his first four-hit outing of the season. He led the first with a single and later scored on a Larry Sheets base hit.

Glenn Gulliver and John Tutt provided RBI singles in a three-run second. Vic Rodriguez finished 3-for-5 on the game with a triple and three RBI as the Wings (25-48) won for the first time in 10 home games.

Crowley joked during batting practice that the Wings, who were enjoying a successful pre-game session, should don the warmup jerseys worn prior to the game. Verdi went along with the idea and added after the game that the Wings would wear the same shirts for the series finale the following night.

John Pacella (2-1) allowed one run on six hits over five innings to pick up the win. Dan Morogiello worked four shutout innings in relief to pick up his third save of the season.

Bonner, who retired from baseball at the end of the season, was inducted to the Wings Hall of Fame in 2000. A third round pick of the Orioles in the 1978 draft, Bonner was named the IL Rookie of the Year in 1980, the year he also started in the league’s All-Star Game. A slick-fielding shortstop, Bonner handled 706 chances during the ’80 season and finished with a fielding percentage of .956.
