Section V Semifinals Preview: Boys’ Basketball Class A1

Section V Class A1 heads to Webster Schroeder High School for its final four. All top four seeds remain. Here’s the breakdown:

No. 1 IRONDEQUOIT (18-3/Monroe County II) vs. No. 4 PITTSFORD MENDON (16-5/Monroe County III): 8:15 PM, Wednesday, Webster Schroeder High School

Scoring offense: Irondequoit (65.7 PPG), Pittsford Mendon (63.5 PPG)

Scoring defense: Irondequoit (51.6 PPG), Pittsford Mendon (53.7 PPG)

Current streak: Irondequoit has won 15 straight; Pittsford Mendon has won four straight

How they got here: Irondequoit held off a late Churchville-Chili rally for a 64-62 quarterfinal victory.

Pittsford Mendon cruised past No. 5 Brockport, 73-45, in the quarterfinals as Jackson Green and Jacob Shadders combined for 41 points.

Last time they met: This will be the first meeting between the teams since January 22nd, 2016.

Players to Watch for Irondequoit: Keenan Robertson Jr. F 18.6 PPG; Nick Leonardo Sr. G 10.0 PPG; Luke Melidona Sr. G 9.4 PPG; Connor Shafer Sr. G 9.0 PPG

Pittsford Mendon: Jacob Shadders Jr. G 21.8 PPG, 1,030 career varsity points; Jackson Green Fr. G 14.2 PPG and Nate Strauf Sr. F 4.8 PPG.

History 101: These two teams have combined to win the last three A1 titles. Mendon won 2019 and advanced to the NYS finals. Irondequoit claimed the 2017 and ’18 crowns. The 2017 Irodnequoit squad won the NYS title.

Coaches: Chris Cardon (Irondequoit), Robert Nally (Pittsford Mendon)

What’s at stake: A spot in the Class A1 sectional final against the winner of Leadership Academy/Eastridge.

No. 2 LEADERSHIP ACADEMY (17-4/RCAC Upper) vs. No. 3 EASTRIDGE (17-4/Monroe County III): 6:30 PM, Wednesday, Webster Schroeder High School

Scoring offense: Leadership Academy (79.9 PPG), Eastridge (73.4 PPG)

Scoring defense: Leadership Academy (71.2 PPG), Eastridge (62.9 PPG)

Current streak: Leadership Academy has won two straight; Eastridge has won five of six

How they got here: Maurice McKinney had 22 points and seven assists and Kennyh Hardeman tallied a 16-point, 10-rebound double-double as Leadership Academy defeated Spencerport, 67-62.

Eastridge held off No. 6 Greece Athena, 63-56, behind Jalen Rose-Hannah’s 17 points.
