
PENFIELD, N.Y. — Nyara Simmons scored 10 of her 15 points during the third quarter when the Penfield girls’ basketball team turned a one-possession game into a double-digit advantage on their way to a 54-32 win over Webster Thomas in Class AA quarter-final action.
Simmons connected five times from the floor coming out of the locker room as the Patriots outscored Thomas 16-5 over the eight minutes. Leading 21-18 after two quarters, Penfield (19-2) went on to win its third straight and advanced to face Our Lady of Mercy in the semi-finals.
Junior forward Haley Emmick matched her teammate with a game-high 15 points to go with eight rebounds, five steals, four blocks and an assist.
Baylee Teal scored 14 points to go with three assists and three steals.
Jessica Rinere and Jasmine Cohoon added three points apiece. Kylie Bell and Kennedy Cone both scored two.
Simmons grabbed five rebounds while collecting four assists and two steals.
Freshman Mady Kelly paced Webster Thomas with 14 points. Audrey Mack added seven, and Lyndsay Cuff had five points. Abby Roetker (3), Anyanka Katz (2) and Mary Marrapese (1) rounded out the scoring for Thomas (10-12).
Penfield beat Mercy, 65-39 when the two teams met in mid-January. A 7:45 tip-off is scheduled for Monday at Webster Schroeder High School.
