IRONDEQUOIT, N.Y. — The Churchville-Chili boys’ basketball team scored the first seven points and never trailed on their way to an 82-67 win over NE Douglass in the consolation round of the Al Masino Tip Off Tournament at Eastridge High School, Saturday.
John Keele led four in double figures, and the Saints picked up their first win of the season.
“Last night was a tough loss to a good team, Webster Thomas,” Churchville head coach Tim Miller said referring to Friday’s 64-63 setback. “Today was bounce-back day. We just wanted to come out, play hard and dictate tempo of the game.”
Keele scored the game’s first basket. Teammate Griffin Stella followed with a 3-pointer, and Kamerin Poromon connected on a pull-up jumper.
Tylor Allen came off the bench and scored eight in the first quarter. The senior center took a Poromon dish in the lane to give C-C its first double-digit lead at 23-12.
“We give a few of them the green light when they’re open to let it go,” Miller added.
Keene, who was named to the All-Tournament team, scored nine in the second quarter when the Saints pushed their lead to 19 at 37-18.
Poromon hit three 3-pointers in the third quarter and finished with 17. Stella added 19 points for the game.

“We try to preach to the kids to be ball movers,” Miller explained. “Get the ball moving around. Understand that on any given night you only get eight or ten points, but one of your teammates may end up with 20. On another night, you may be getting all the wide-open shots. It’s awfully difficult to defend teams that move the ball well and use 20 to 25 seconds of that clock and get good shots.”
NE Douglass forced turnovers on five of six possessions during the second quarter. Adonis Flagler hit a pair of shots from long range. Jason Jones and Nicolas Jeanty hit back-to-back triples to cut the deficit to 10 at halftime, 43-33.

“They’re missing one of their better players, one of their better ballhandlers,” Miller said referring to NE Douglass guard Lamar Lovelace who is sidelined with an injury. “We really thought if we pressured the ball, we could turn them over quite a bit. That’s going to be a good team down the road.”
Collin Cantrell added nine points for Churchville (1-2). Marcus Postell had five, and Jason Gibbs scored two points.

Flagler who scored 36 points in the Panthers’ (1-2) loss on Friday followed that with 30 more points on Saturday. The senior guard earned All-Tournament honors. Jeanty added 20. Jones had five. Trynzier Parker (4), Jayden Berry (4), Delzair Hanks (2) and Je’Keim Mosley (2) rounded out the scoring for NE Douglass.
