Football Far West Regional Preview: Class A

Canandaigua is coming off their ninth sectional title in program history and first since 2007.

A spot in the New York State semifinals is up for grabs when Section V and Section VI meet at the College at Brockport this upcoming weekend for the Football Far West Regionals. Here’s the breakdown:

SOUTH PARK SPARKS (10-0) vs. CANANDAIGUA BRAVES (9-1)

How they arrived here: Top-seeded South Park (No. 6 NYSSWA) opened sectionals with a 14-7 win over Williamsville North. The Sparks continued with a 36-23 victory over Grand Island and a 38-0 shutout over McKinley in the finals.

Canandaigua (No. 18 NYSSWA) downed No. 5 Victor, 24-10, in the quarterfinals before beating Eastridge (56-40) and East (21-13) to win their ninth sectional title in program history and first since 2007.

Points scored per game: South Park (40.4), Canandaigua (33.7)
Points allowed per game: South Park (8.4), Canandaigua (14.9)

Players to watch: South Park – Brandan Brown Sr. WR, DB 615 receiving yards, 6 touchdowns, 49 tackles; Marqwan Fluitt Jr. DE, RB 94 tackles, 19 sacks, 1 fumble recovery; Mykell Hepburn Jr. QB 1,763 passing yards, 207 rushing yards, 24 touchdowns; Keith Jackson Jr. RB, LB 789 rushing yards, 245 receiving yards, 15 touchdowns, 78 tackles, 6 sacks, 3 interceptions, 100 interception yards, 3 fumble recoveries

Canandaigua – Bryan Boldrin So. QB, DB 713 passing yards; J.C. Clifford Sr. WR, DL 39 tackles; Casey Herod Sr. WR, DB 247 receiving yards

Coaches: Timothy Delaney (South Park), Jeffrey Welch (Canandaigua)

What they’re saying: Welch – “We look forward to the challenge of playing a South Park team that is athletic and physical. We hope to represent Section V well.”

What’s at stake: A spot in the NYS Class A semifinals against the winner of Carthage (III) vs. Union-Endicott (IV).

An 8 p.m. kickoff is scheduled Friday night at the College at Brockport.
