WALWORTH, N.Y. — Father knows best.
With sectionals to start in a week and the chance of breaking a national record weighing upon her, Marion’s Chloe DeLyser turned to the advice of her dad.
The senior forward put words into action.
DeLyser netted five goals in a 7-0 Marion victory over Gananda, Tuesday night. Her third tally was the 317th of her career, breaking the previous national mark.
“My dad just told me ‘get this over with,'” DeLyser said after breaking the record. “Just getting it done was probably the best plan.”
DeLyser took a lofted pass from her sister Abigail Marotta and attacked the Gananda goal one-on-one.

“My sister, she had her head up and she found me,” DeLyser recalled of the record-setting marker. “Played it over it the girl. Headed it. I ran on to it. I knew I had tons of time. I took my time, was just relaxed on the ball and put it in the back of the net.”
The goal set the previous mark held by Esmie Gonzalez of Fort Worth, Texas.
DeLyser connected on her first tally of the night less than two minutes into the game. She tied the national record with 36:41 remaining in the half. Little more than eight minutes later, she was breaking into the open field again for her 57th goal of the season.

“It feels like a lot relief,” she said of breaking the record. “Because, you know every day we’re like ‘How close are you?’ But right now it’s just exciting, getting to do it with this team my senior year. But it’s a lot of relief going into sectionals. Now I can just focus on that.”
The Western NY Flash member and Ohio State University commit hit twice more on the night to run her season total to 59. DeLyser also has 20 assists. As a seventh grader she scored 29 goals. She followed that with 37 goals as an eighth grader then 47, 68 and 79 markers the years after that.
“It’s showing all my hard work since I was six has truly paid off. Working outside of soccer, traveling two hours for premier soccer, it’s all ended up perfect for me, I guess.”
Marotta finished with three assists on the night. She had the helper on her sister’s second and third scores.
“It’s really exciting,” DeLyser said of having her sister factor in the outcome. “She’s a little eighth grader and having your sister do it? How much cooler can that get, really?”
Marion improved to 14-1-0. The Black Knights close the regular season on Friday when they host Sodus.
Brooke Guerin and Scarlett Keppen also scored. Jackie DeMarco and Ashley Sloane added an assist apiece. DeLyser and Keppen both had an assist apiece.
