CLIFTON SPRINGS, N.Y. – After avenging back-to-back losses to Honeoye Falls-Lima, the UPrep varsity football team needed to maintain focus for a potential “trap” game. Kala Gause’s squad came ready to play, exploding for 28 points in the opening period en route to a 56-0 shutout of Midlakes, Saturday night.
“I prepare for Midlakes the same way I did for HF-L (Honeoye Falls-Lima),” Gause explained. “We got to come out here and play UPrep football, no matter who we’re playing.”
Senior Michael Cathey set the tempo early, breaking out for a 19-yard run on the first play of the game before sprinting 39 more to the house.
Cathey punished the Midlakes defense with seven carries for 160 rushing yards and three touchdowns. The senior running back galloped a combined 110 yards on his touchdown runs. Cathey has 464 rushing yards and found the end zone six times through the first three games.
“He was able to be the workhorse that we needed him to be early on,” Gause said about his senior running back. “It worked out for us as well. The line was blocking up front. He was able to get outside and use his speed once he got to second level.”
Junior tight end Andre Facen, Jr. caught a pair of touchdown passes for 60 yards. Clyde Davis, Jr. completed 5-of-8 passes for 33 yards in 24 minutes of game action. The sophomore quarterback has thrown for 308 yards and three touchdowns to start his varsity career.

Senior Ray Rivera led a staunch defense with 15 tackles to bring his total to 38 on the season. Luis Ortiz had seven tackles while Ramire White added five and an interception. Junior Mohamed Hussein snagged two interceptions, including a pick-six.
“That was something that was one of our season goals: to pitch a shutout,” Gause explained. “We got it. Hopefully it’s the start of something new.”
