ICBL Monday: Edgett, Morgan lead Wings; Butler strikes out 11 in complete game shutout

Stephen Edgett (St. John Fisher College) hit the go-ahead, three-run homer in the fifth inning as the top-seeded Wings defeated the Monarchs in the opening round of the 2019 Interstate Collegiate Baseball League playoffs. Tied at one, Ryan Hill (Monroe Community College) drew a walk and Justin Graham (St. John Fisher College) was hit by a pitch to set up runners at first and second. Edge followed and lined the first pitch he saw to the right field fence and legged out a two-out, inside-the-park home run to give the Wings a 4-1 lead. For the game, the senior center fielder was 2-for-3 with a single and reached on a fielder’s choice. Paul Morgan (Finger Lakes Community College) finished two outs shy of a complete game, allowing five hits, one walk and striking out four batters. After giving up a run in the opening frame, the junior right-hander retired 13 of the next 14 hitters he faced.

Frankie Santiago Colon (Finger Lakes Community College) drew a walk, reached on an error and was hit by a pitch. Hill singled and drew a walk. Besides being hit by a pitch, Graham had a walk and scored on a sacrifice fly from Ben Martin (St. John Fisher College) in the first inning. Martin drew a pair of walks as well. Shane Harisis (SUNY Brockport) and Jordan Maher (SUNY Fredonia) both had a walk. Harisis scored on a wild pitch in the sixth. For the Monarchs, Tyler Broderick (Keuka College) drove in Will Porter (Rochester Institute of Technology) with a single down the right field line in the opening frame. Porter connected for a pair of singles. Thomas Amuso (Rochester Institute of Technology) doubled down the left field line. Marty Williams hurled five innings and struck out five batters.

FLYIN’ FISH 9

Chris Butler (Keuka College) hurled a complete game shutout to lead the Flyin’ Fish. The right-hander struck out 11 while allowing one hit and three walks. Butler retired the last nine hitters he faced, induced eight groundouts and two in the air.

In the fourth inning, the Flyin’ Fish sent nine men to the plate and scored five runs on three hits to take a 6-0 lead.

Andrew Zibuck tripled, singled, drew a walk, drove in a run and crossed the plate three times to pace the offense. Ray Specht (Niagara County Community College) collected a pair of RBI singles, drew a walk and scored a run. Sean Sheets (Keuka College) drove in Jorge Oropeza (Alfred State College) and Specht with an infield single in the fourth. Justin LoTemple (Alfred State College) collected a base knock, reached on an error and scored twice. James Sciortino singled and crossed the plate once. Anthony Mashewske (Keuka College) walked and scored a run. For the Lake Monsters, Logan Martella-Tasick (Monroe Community College) singled through the left side for the team’s only hit of the game. Dylan Hillabush (SUNY Brockport) started and struck out five batters in four innings of work. The Flyin’ Fish will play the Wings in Tuesday’s second round. The Lake Monsters will meet the Monarchs.
