NORFOLK, VA. — The Rochester Red Wings (47-49) used a four-run fifth inning to take the third of a four-game series with a 5-4 victory over the Norfolk Tides (36-60).
Jimmy Kerrigan led off the fifth with a double and Drew Maggi followed and reached on 13th hit-by-pitch of the year. With no outs and two men on, Ronald Torreyes advanced Kerrigan and Maggi with a sacrifice bunt.
Three pitches later, veteran outfielder and newest Red Wing, Alejandro De Aza, singled home a pair. Wilin Rosario reached on a base hit, and Jaylin Davis made it a 4-0 game with a single up the middle.
As part of the four-run fifth, Wynston Sawyer picked up his first hit of the series, doubling in Rosario.
Davis spotted the Wings a 1-0 lead in the fourth when he cracked his 12th home run of the year and second of the series. Davis now has four homers in his last five games.
Lewis Thorpe earned his fifth win after tossing five innings of one-run ball. Thorpe gave up four hits and struck out three. His first strike out was his 100th of the season.
Jake Reed relieved Thorpe in the sixth inning and gave up one run on two hits. Fernando Romero struck out one and walked two after throwing an inning and a third.
Ian Krol struck out the side in the ninth.
Ryan Mountcastle and Jesus Sucre connected on an RBI double apiece as the Tides cut the deficit to one in the ninth.
Rosario, Davis and Kerrigan each had two hits and a run scored in the game. Seven different Wings collected at least one hit.
Rochester native, Christopher Bostick went 1-for-4 with a single and a sacrifice bunt.
The Red Wings will conclude the four-game series against the Tides on Thursday, July 17. First pitch is scheduled for 12:05 p.m.
