ICBL Sunday: Gauer paces Lake Monsters; Monarchs show no mercy

LAKE MONSTERS 10
WINGS 4
Erik Gauer (Gordon) led the Lake Monsters offense by going 4-for-4 with three RBI. Two of his four hits were triples and he also scored three runs.

Gauer was not alone in producing big offensive numbers for the Lake Monsters, as many of their hitters that were lower in the order contributed in a big way. Nicolas Fiore (SUNY Fredonia), Evan Newkirk (Castleton), AJ Nestler (Finger Lakes CC), Ryan Ballard (Tompkins Cortland CC) and Kole Brink (SUNY Fredonia) all notched two hits in the contest and manned the 6-10 slots in the lineup. Fiore and Brink each knocked in two runs while Nestler plated one. The only other extra-base hit on the day came from Nate Sanderson (Hilbert), who finished the day 1-for-2 with a double and an RBI.

While it was a rough day for the Wings’ pitching, its offense did have a good sixth inning. Ryan Hill (Monroe CC) scored the Wings’ first run of the game on a passed ball. Colin Coykendall (Monroe CC) then drove in two runs with a single. Coykendall later scored on a wild pitch.

Aiden Bova, the Lake Monsters’ starting pitcher, finished six innings pitched with six hits and one walk allowed. All four runs Bova surrendered were earned and he also punched out six batters. Christian Montanez (Roger Williams) came in to close out the game and threw a 1-2-3 seventh without recording a strikeout.

MONARCHS 16
FLYIN’ FISH 1
Tyler Broderick (Keuka), Dylan Broderick and Tyler Cyrus (John Carroll) led an offensive outburst from the Monarchs. Tyler Broderick finished a perfect 4-for-4 with an RBI and a double. Dylan Broderick went 2-for-3 with three RBI, three runs and two doubles. Cyrus wound up collecting three hits in four at bats and added four RBI.

The Monarchs received help from all across its lineup, as multiple other players drove in runs or had multiple hits. Shane Hake (Elmira) only had one hit on the day but made it count, blasting a three-run home run that opened the score up to 5-0. Tyler Griggs (UConn) finished 2-for-4 with a triple and two RBI. Maxwell Yale (Allegheny) and Kole Brink each added one hit and one RBI. Yale’s hit was a double.

Trevor Povlock (RIT) started on the bump for the Monarchs and threw four innings, allowing one earned run on two hits and a walk. Povlock also tallied four punch outs. Pat Xander threw the final frame and set two batters down on strikes.

Cody Cooper (Slippery Rock) went 2-for-2 with a run scored and a triple to pace the Fish. Jorge Oropeza (Alfred State) drove him in on a fielder’s choice. Ryan Demitrovic (Alfred State) was the only pitcher for the Flyin’ Fish to not allow at least three runs, albeit in just 0.2 innings work. Demitrovic struck out one and did not allow a hit or walk in his brief stint toeing the slab.
