ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Miles Brown made it official on Thursday. The Northstar Christian Academy star and Section V’s all-time leading scorer will continue his career at Ohio University.
To no surprise, loyalty played a role.
Twin brother, Michael, will accompany Miles as a preferred walk-on at the Mid American Conference school.
“To continue my basketball career with my brother has always been a dream,” Miles Brown said Thursday. “We dreamed of this moment since the day we were born, to go Division I and play basketball with each other. Now is the day.
“I definitely wasn’t going without him. Where ever I was going, Michael was definitely going to be right by my side.”
Originally committed to Stonybrook University, Miles Brown will follow Jeff Boals to the Athens, Ohio school. Boals, a former team captain of the Ohio Bobcats, returns to his alma mater after leading Stonybrook for three years.
“I have a great relationship with the coaching staff,” Miles Brown said referring also to assistant coach Lamar Thornton. “I took my official visit to Ohio. Just being on campus with the guys it just felt like a family atmosphere. They embraced me like one of their brothers.”
A three-time Section V tournament MVP, Miles Brown finished his career with 2,914 points. He was named 2018 NYS Class C Player of the Year and to the 2019 NYS Class A Third Team. He holds (unofficially) the NYS record for steals with 458 and the Northstar Christian single-game record with 53 points.
“It was a big stress reliever,” Brown said of getting the decision out of the way. “I had anxiety like crazy. Just anxious to announce my college decision. I’m happy with my decision.”
A two-time Section V All-Tournament team selection, Michael Brown, Jr. set Northstar Christian record for assists in a season and assists per game as well as the single-game steals mark of 13.
“Being able to go to college with my brother and continue my career is a great opportunity,” Michael Brown said. “I know it’s coming from the Lord above. I’m very thankful for it, and I just can’t wait to see the great things we can do and accomplish in college.”
Boals spent seven years as an assistant under Thad Matta at Ohio State. During his time with the Buckeyes, the Magnolia, Ohio native worked with current NBA players Jared Sullinger, D’Angelo Russell and Evan Turner.
Miles Brown had also received Division I scholarship offers from Bryant, Canisius, Central Arkansas, Fordham and Niagara University.
