High School Baseball Preview: Wayne County

CLYDE-SAVANNAH GOLDEN EAGLES (Class C2)

Last season: 2-17, lost in the first round of sectionals.

Coach: Dan Bonafede (42-69/seventh year).

Top returners: Jake Geil (Sr. P/INF), Hunter Donselaar (Jr. P/1B), Jake Bastian (Jr. C), Greg Bailey (Sr. OF/P).

Top newcomers: Tanner Brown (Jr. INF/P), Jake Hartnagel (So. INF).

First game: Thursday, April 4th at Waterloo.

Outlook: The Golden Eagles have a relatively inexperienced and young team. Will they improve throughout the season to improve from last year?

GANANDA BLUE PANTHERS (Class C1)

Last season: 16-4, lost in Sectional finals to Avon

Coach: Bill McClare (63-31/sixth year)

Top returners: Tim McClare (Sr. SS/P – First Team All-County, Wayne County Co-Player of the Year, Second Team All-State, finished his junior season with a .454 average, seven doubles, one triple, and one homer; held a 0.42 ERA and a 4-1 record with 62 strike outs, Canisius College commit), Jayden Castrechini (Sr. C/1B/P, First Team All-County, .328 batting average with five doubles, scored 26 runs and stole 11 bases; finished with a 0.72 ERA and a 1-1 record, Alfred University Football commit), Zack Ciprich (Sr. P/SS – First Team All-County, hit .404 with four doubles, scored 20 runs and stole 11 bases; finished 4-2 on the mound with a 1.22 ERA), Pat Walsh (So. 1B/P, .333 batting average with 10 RBI), Zack Dier (Sr. 2B/CF), Christian Clarq (Jr. 3B/OF).

Top newcomers: Andrew Gleason (Fr. 2B/OF – 5-foot-11, 155 lbs), Luke Ciprich (Fr. OF/2B – 5-foot-7, 150 lbs).

Next game: Thursday, April 4 at Aquinas.

Outlook: The Panthers lost four big contributors from last year’s sectional finalist squad. However, they return a solid core group to lead the reigning Wayne County champions. Can the younger talent fill in the gaps to create another successful Gananda squad?

EAST ROCHESTER BOMBERS (Class C1)

Last season: 11-8, lost in quarterfinals to Avon.

Next game: Monday, April 8th vs. Clyde-Savannah.

LYONS LIONS (Class C2)

Last season: 6-10, lost to Perry/Mount Morris in round one.

Coach: Dean Schott II

First game: Wednesday, April 10th vs. East Rochester.

 

NORTH ROSE-WOLCOTT/RED CREEK (Class B2)

Last season: 5-10 (North Rose-Wolcott), lost in the first round of Class C1 tournament; 2-14 (Red Creek), lost in the first round of Class C2 tourney.

Coach: Erik Pentycofe

First game: Friday, April 5th vs. Marcus Whitman

SODUS SPARTANS (Class C1)

Last season: 11-3

Coach: Bob Burlee (117-142/15th year).

Top returners: Donovan Fillmore (So. P/INF), Ryan DeBadts (Jr. C/INF).

Top newcomers: Christopher Sergeant (Jr. INF/P), Marquese Burton (Jr. INF/P).

Next game: Friday, April 5th vs. Gananda.

Outlook: The Spartans come into the 2019 season as a young team with freshmen and sophomores stepping into starting roles. Can the young talent repeat past Sodus success?

WILLIAMSON MARAUDERS (Class C1)

Last season: 14-4

Coach: Brian Steurrys (222-248/16th year).

Top returners: Adam Fisk (Sr. P/INF – First Team All-County, finished 4-1 with a 0.92 ERA), Marty Williams (Sr. P/INF – Second Team All-County, finished 3-1 with a 2.20 ERA and 1 save), Lucas Jackson (Jr. C/P – First Team All-County, recorded a .396 batting average with 6 doubles and 2 triples; threw out 50 percent of base stealers), Hunter Byron (Sr.), Ryan Morse (Sr.), James Williams (Sr.), Dylan Woodworth (Sr.).

First game: Friday, April 5th vs. Clyde-Savannah.

Outlook: With key returners on the field for Williamson, will they repeat as a top contender for the league title?
